Happy 76th Birthday Farmor! Queen Margrethe Celebrates Surrounded by Family

The Queen of Denmark was surrounded by her eight grandchildren today as she celebrated her 76th birthday with a traditional balcony appearance at Amalienborg.

To the cheers of the awaiting crowd, Queen Margrethe (in a bright blue dress and coat – she is a big fan of this shade it seems) stepped out on to the central balcony with her husband, Prince Henrik, as her two sons – Frederik and Joachim – and their families appeared on the side balconies.

As usual there was several swaps during the balcony appearance, with the grandchildren – Princes Christian, Vincent, Nikolai, Felix and Henrik and Princesses Isabella, Josephine and Athena – joining their farmor for a short time before Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie had their turn.

The youngest grandchild, Athena, was the most adventurous this year, eagerly pulling herself up on the balcony railing using the framing as foot holes so she could get a better look below.
