Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of his official visit to Denmark later this week, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan has pledged to devote himself to the duties that come with becoming Japan’s Emperor.

“I would like to give my whole heart and soul to every duty, including official duties I have already inherited from His Majesty,” the Prince said, when he was questioned about the constitutional role of Emperor in connection with the Japanese Parliament passing a law last week to allow his father, Emperor Akihito, to abdicate.

“While serving many years as a symbol of the people, the Emperor has tackled his tasks extremely seriously, taking every one of them close to heart and sincerely seeking out how his ideal role should be,” Prince Naruhito said of his father’s reign.

The Crown Prince is set to become Emperor of Japan upon his father’s abdication, which is to take place within the next three years – December 2018 is being touted as the likely date.
