Prince Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi turned one year old on September 27. He is the son and heir of Prince David Bagration of Mukhrani and Princess Anna Bagration-Gruzinsky.

The young Prince was born at 22:40 local time on September 27th, in Madrid, weighting 3.7 kilograms. From birth, he has been styled and titles His Royal Highness The Prince Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi. The press release for the Georgian Royal Family at the time stated: “The birth of the young Prince has been a source of immense joy and happiness to the Royal Family.”

Giorgi’s father, Prince David, is the heir male of the Bagration family while his mother, Princess Anna, is the heiress of Prince Nugzar Bagrationi, the most senior descendant of the last Bagrationi to reign over the united Kingdom of Georgia.

The two branches of the family contested leadership over the house; however, the marriage of Prince David and Princess put an end to those struggles and united the Bagrations. The young couple’s son is the undisputed heir to both families. And indeed, on November 23, 2011 Nugzar Bagrationi recognized his grandson as an heir of the Gruzinsky Branch.

If no other Bagrationi prince is born in either the Gruzinsky or Mukhrani branch who is of senior descent by primogeniture, and he survives those now living, Prince Giorgi will become both the heir male of the House of Bagrationi and the heir general of George XIII of Georgia.

The monarchist movement in Georgia is relatively small but vocal, and is supported by the Church. In addition, most major political parties also seem to support, or at least, not openly oppose the possibility of a restoration in future, seeing a Monarch could have potentially unite all parts of Georgia.

Happy Birthday to the little Prince.
