After announcing their engagement on Monday morning, Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank gave a short interview to Matt Baker of the BBC’s The One Show later that day at Buckingham Palace.

The couple – who also had their official engagement portraits shot in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace today – spoke of Mr Brooksbank’s lake-side proposal earlier in January during a trip to Nicaragua.

“The lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen. I actually said this is an incredible moment, and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years,” Princess Eugenie said, adding that “it was the perfect moment”.

Jack agreed, calling the moment (complete with “a beautiful volcano, [the] sun was setting, birds were flying”) “amazing” and that he was “just really really happy and over the moon for what’s to come. Very, very excited to spend a lifetime together,” making a little light of the important family he was marrying into: “It’s very, very special to be a part of your family now. But we’re just Jack and Eug, I suppose.”

Princess Eugenie – who wore a floral printed Erdem dress – happily presented her engagement ring, a padparadscha sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Padparadscha sapphires are typically found in Sri Lanka, and are one of the rarest sapphires, toned a mix of pink and orange.

The Princess helped to finalise the design of her engagement ring, once Jack had popped the question: “I found a ring in a jewellers and then proposed to Eugenie without it and came back and we designed the diamonds around this padparadscha sapphire,” Jack said, adding he wanted to get final “sign off” from his bride-to-be.

“What’s amazing about it [the sapphire] is that it changes colour from every different angle that you look at it, which is what I think of Eugenie. That she changes colour and is just so amazing,” the beaming groom said, earning a large smile from Eugenie.

Princess Eugenie confirmed that her grandparents, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, were “very happy” with the news, and that “Granny actually knew right at the beginning” about the engagement.

The couple – who will marry in autumn at St George’s Chapel, Windsor – expect to begin planning the wedding within the coming days; Jack joking that he wasn’t “sure I’ll get a word in edgeways”.
