The Dutch Royal Court announced this morning that Jorge Zorreguieta, the father of Queen Maxima, passed away on August 8th in Buenos Aires. He had been suffering from a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for some time.

The Queen was in Buenos Aires alongside her mother and siblings for her father’s last moments. Mr Zorreguieta was 89 years old.

King Willem-Alexander and the couple’s three daughters, Princesses Catharina-Amalia, Alexia and Ariane, have landed a short time ago in Argentina to be with their family and attend Mr Zorreguieta’s funeral, which is believed to be later today.

Mr Zorreguieta was born in 1928, and would become the Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock under the regime of General Videla from 1979 to 1981. It was his role in the Videla regime that saw Mr Zorreguieta banned from his daughter’s 2002 wedding when she married the then heir to the Dutch throne, Willem-Alexander. He is survived by his wife Maria del Carmen, his seven children and a number of grandchildren.
