Dutch Royals At “Appeltjes van Oranje 2017”

This morning, Thursday May 18, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, along with Princess Beatrix, attended the “Appeltjes van Oranje 2017” award ceremony held at the Palace Nooreinde in The Hague. The theme of this year’s award was “Strong Kids”, focused on vulnerable children.

The winners of “Appeltjes van Oranje 2017” were the foundation Ervaringsmaatjes of the Stichting Informele Zorg (SIZ) from Twente that is taking care of people with vulnerability; the foundation Buurtgezinnen.nl from the south of Amsterdam that offers support to single mothers, refugee families or families where mental handicap is involved ; and the foundation Stichting Weekend Academie from Amsterdam that is focused in the help of young people between 10-15 years and their parents.

The prize consists of a bronze sculpture designed by Princess Beatrix and 15,000 euros.

To mark the 15th anniversary of Appeltjes van Oranje, the speech was held by King Willem-Alexander. The King praised the volunteers of the three foundations for their efforts towards the people and families in need and for all the opportunities that they are giving to the vulnerable children.

The “Appeltjes van Oranje”started in 2003 as an annual award of the “Oranje Fonds”. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are patrons of The Oranje Fonds that was created in 2002 as a gift for the couple on occasion of their wedding.
