Belgian Queen Mathilde joined the other royal ladies who selected red outfits this week as she attended the 10th European Development Days conference in Brussels.

She toured the stands and exhibitions that are part of the event, which is hosted by the European Commission to bring together the development community to share ideas to inspire new partnerships and solutions,  before giving a keynote address on the impact of the Sustainable Development Goals, of which she is a UN Advocate.

“[They] can only be realised in an environment of peace, security and stability,” Queen Mathilde said, adding that “we must all work together in a spirit of genuine co-operation and partnership. We must promote policies that stimulate trade, build capacity and transfer technology” if the goals are to be successful long-term.

She ended her speech – which was delivered in both French and English – that “a new vision is emerging…we are laying new foundations. The SDGs are the missing piece in globalisation.”
