Princess Alexandra of Hanover, the widow of Prince Welf Heinrich, passed away today at the age of 77 following a battle with cancer.

“Frankfurt’s culture has lost a great woman,” Frankfurt am Main’s Cultural Affairs Minister Felix Semmelroth said on the announcement of her death, as she was a member of the Frankfurt City Council for over three decades. During her time in the council, Princess Alexandra founded the St Catherine’s Hospice, was on the board of a number of charities and was involved heavily in social and cultural policy. In 2007, Alexandra was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by President Horst Köhler.

She was described as a “popular and engaging personality” by her fellow council and party members.

The Princess was born on October 23, 1937 as a Princess of Ysenburg and Büdingen. She married Prince Welf Heinrich, son of Ernst August, Duke of Cumberland and Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, in September 1960. The couple had no children.
