Death of Princess Carin of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha has announced that his wife, Princess Carin, died last weekend. She died on November 11th at the age of 77.

Princess Carin was born in Hamburg on July 16, 1946 as Carin Dabelstein. She was the daughter of the printing company owner Adolf Dabelstein and his wife Irma Callsen. She later trained as an interpreter. Prince Andreas met her when he livedin the same city. While she worked as an interpreter at the Japanese Trade Center, among other things, he worked for a Japanese financial company.

In 1970 he asked for her hand in marriage and the couple married in 1971. “Although Carin was not an equal according to the conditions of the nobility, my father recognized our marriage,” writes the prince.

The couple stayed in Hamburg during the first years of their marriage, and their first two children, Princess Stephanie and Prince Hubertus, were born here in 1972 and 1975. The young family then moved to Coburg in Upper Franconia. A year after the move, the couple’s third child, Prince Alexander, was born in 1977.

In 1997, Carin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Initially, she was able to live a normal life thanks to mild symptoms, but over the years her condition worsened and required constant care. “Carin enjoyed reading a good book and enjoying music, but above all she loved trying out new recipes in the kitchen,” says Prince Andreas’ writes on his website.
