Queen Letizia Turns 50

Her Majesty Queen Letizia celebrates her 50th birthday today. She was born Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano on September 15, 1972 in Oviedo. Daughter of Jesus Ortiz Alvarez and Paloma Rocasolano Rodriguez, the Queen has two sisters, Telma and Erika (died in 2007). Letizia started her schooling in Oviedo and completed her education in Madrid, at the Ramiro de Maeztu Institute. Then Letizia studied at the Complutense University of Madrid where she graduated with a degree in Information Sciences, Journalism branch and she completed her education with a Master’s Degree in Audiovisual Journalism from the Institute of Audiovisual Journalism Studies.
During her studies Letizia worked for several newspapers and news agecies and in 2000 she “joined Televisión Española, where he worked with the editing team of Telediario Second Edition and was in charge of presenting the Weekly Report. Subsequently, she presented the Morning Newscast, the specials on the Euro that were offered on TVE Newscasts and was sent special to different parts of the world to cover current events. She was also an editor in the area of society, education and science, and later she returned to be part of the editing team of the Second Edition Newscast, of which she was co-anchor”.
In 2002, during a dinner, Letizia met the then Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias.
On November 1st, 2003, Their Majesties the King and Queen Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía announced the engagement of the Prince of Asturias to Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. Letizia and Felipe married on May 22, 2004 in the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid.
Queen Letizia and King Felipe have two daughters: Princess Leonor, Princess of Asturias, born on October 31, 2005, and Infanta Sofía, born on April 29, 2007.
Queen Letizia is involved in several activities in the field of health, education and social issues. Since September 2010 the Queen is Honorary Presidency of the Spanish Association Against Cancer and its Scientific Foundation and she is also Honorary President of UNICEF Spain.
