King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia Join Farewell To Germany’s Helmut Kohl

Spain was represented by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia on Saturday at the memorial service for the late German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, held in Strasbourg, France at the European Parliament.

They joined leaders such as current German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and former US President Bill Clinton, all of whom spoke at the late Chancellor’s European Act of State, the first held by the European Union.

Earlier, the former King and Queen signed a book of condolence after paying their respects to Kohl’s coffin and offering condolences to his widow, Maike Kohl-Richter.

Also present for the service were the Prince and Princess of Prussia, Georg Friedrich and Sophie.

Mr Kohl passed away on June 16 at the age of 87. He was Chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1998, and was a described as “not just the architect of German unity. He contributed substantially, more than others, to the reconciliation between European history and European geography” by the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
