In the wake of Wednesday afternoon’s terror attack in Westminster, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh’s planned engagement to open the new headquarters of the Metropolitan Police has been postponed.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said this evening that “in light of today’s events the decision has been taken to postpone the Queen’s engagement to New Scotland Yard” and that it will be rescheduled for another date.

Three people were killed when a man ran down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before crashing his car into the gates in front of the Houses of Parliament, where he attacked Metropolitan Police PC Keith Palmer with a knife, causing fatal injuries. Dozens more were injured and remain in hospital. The attacked was shot and killed by police who arrived on the scene within minutes.

Queen Elizabeth was in residence at Buckingham Palace as the attack happened; security was stepped up around the Palace grounds as a precaution.
