Prince Harry has called his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, “the example I aspire to and the standard by which I will judge my contribution” during a speech at the Queen’s Young Leaders award ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

“I – like millions of others across the world – have been able to look to her for inspiration and guidance…The Queen, who assumed the challenge of leadership at such a young age, has shown us all the importance of selfless commitment and service,” he said, before congratulating the 60 young people from across the Commonwealth who won the award this year.

Before they were presented with their awards from the Queen, Harry praised their achievements, “not for yourselves, but for you communities, for your peers, and for those less fortunate,” before calling them inspirations and saying he hoped “this award will inspire you to go out and achieve even greater things.”

Also attending the ceremony and reception afterwards were Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the Duchess of Gloucester, former Prime Minister Sir John Major, David Beckham and shoe designer Jimmy Choo.

The Queen’s Young Leaders Awards are a Commonwealth-wide project which “recognises and celebrates exceptional young people who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives.”
