One of the summer’s longstanding royal events, Royal Ascot, kicked off today at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh led the charge of British royals present for the first day, joined in their carriage by Prince Harry and the Duke of York for the procession onto the course. The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Beatrice, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Princess Royal followed.

The Queen, dressed in a lovely deep pink and floral outfit, unveiled a bronze statue of the racehorse Frankel, one of Britain’s greatest ever racehorses, after the Queen Anne Stakes.

Other attendees were Peter and Autumn Phillips and Zara and Mike Tindall, who all happily chatted with their cousins Harry and Beatrice outside the Royal Enclosure, with Beatrice received a bear hug from Mike. Prince and Princess Michael of Kent were also there for day one.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall presented the trophy for the St James’s Palace Stakes to the connections of Gleneagles, while Prince Harry was on hand to present the trophy for the King’s Stand Stakes to the owners of Goldream.
