The Prince of Monaco Turns 56

Albert II, The Sovereign Prince of Monaco celebrates his 56th birthday on March 14th. The Prince was born in 1958, the only son of the late Rainier III, Prince of Monaco and the iconic Princess Grace. His full name is Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre Grimaldi and was baptised in April 1958, his godparents being his paternal grandfather, Prince Louis de Polignac, and Queen Victoria-Eugénia of Spain.

Following the death of his father in 2005, Albert II succeeded him to the throne and head of the Princely House of Grimaldi.

In July 2011, Albert married the former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock, firstly in a civil ceremony on the 1st of July 2011 and a lavish Roman Catholic religious wedding ceremony on the 2nd of July. The Prince has an older sister, Caroline, The Princess of Hanover and also a younger sister, Princess Stéphanie.

Over the years the Prince has represented the Principality at most major royal gatherings including weddings, funerals and enthronement ceremonies. Most recently the Prince attended the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia and was in Morocco this week on an official visit.
