On Saturday, March 5, Princess Alexandra of Hannover joined about 80 other Monegasque kids for the 10th edition of the Figure Skating Championships on the Principality’s frozen-over Quai d’Albert. The younger daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco, and fifth in line to the Monegasque throne, is now 11 years old. She has been doing competitive figure skating for at least the past year.

At the 9th edition of the Championships, in February 2010, she finished second in her class, and this year she has done it again! She has been starting her Sundays at 0730 to train with her skating club. Her coach, Laurence Thomas, told the Nice Matin that the reason she was only second place is simple: She made some technical mistakes, without which she would have been the champion of her class! But fear not, because Alexandra is not slowing down or taking off her skates anytime soon.

According to her club’s trainer, she has passion and perseverence. Moreover, she has lots of support. Her mother was not only watching, but recording her performance with a digital camera. At least one of the skater’s siblings accompanied Princess Caroline in the stands. It was the young Prince Ernst, oldest of the six Casiraghi-Hannover siblings, and namesake of Princess Caroline’s estranged husband of 12 years. The 27-year-old Prince, who graduated from New York University in 2006, is an investment officer at the First Energy Bank of Bahrain.
