Australia’s Governor-General Begins State Visit to Belgium

At the invitation of Their Majesties King Philippe and the Queen Mathilde, Australian Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife Lynne, begun today, Wednesday June 27, a three-day state visit to Belgium.
The King and the Queen officially received the Governor-General and his wife with a welcoming ceremony held in the courtyard of the Royal Palace in Brussels.
The King with Sir Cosgrove inspected the guard of honor and then were played the national anthems.
Inside the Royal Palace the guest book was signed and the official picture were taken.
In the evening took place the State Banquet hosted by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde at the Laeken Castle.
The King started his speech expressing his gratitude to the Australian people and specially to the Australian troops that died on the Belgian soil during the Great War.
King Philippe also stressed that “countries such as Australia and Belgium have a crucial role to play in creating mutual trust and continuing to promote standards rather than power politics” and he added that both Australians and Europeans stand for human values that ” form the cornerstone of our way of life, our work, what we strive for and how we conduct policy”.
