Charles III: Accession to the Throne: 8 September, 2022

Charles III first visit to Northern Ireland as Monarch!

It's heartening to see how warmly received Charles and by extension, Camilla, have been received everywhere they've gone. I know that monarchy isn't regarded as highly as it once was, but I'm sure despite his immense grief, it's helping to maybe take a little edge off the pain.

I would agree. I am not sure what people expected him to say , once he mentioned William he needed to speak about Harry or that would have been a dig.

There are many challenges ahead for King Charles. Belize and Antigua already announced plans to remove him as their head of state. And the Queen hasn't even been buried!!

People love to focus on these family squabbles. But the truth is Harry and Meghan are a side show to distract from real issues. Would Belize and Antigua like to remain in the commonwealth if Harry and Meghan have stayed as working royals? I doubt it.

In the coming days and weeks, there will be major PR push to try to shore up King Charles image. He has never been as popular as his Mother. There will be effort made to improve his image (for example, there were reports that Charles order William to invite Harry and Meghan to the walkabout, but later that was disputed by William's camp.) It is hilarious that they are fighting over who gets the credit to appear more magnanimous.

It is important for King Charles to try to stay above the fray, like his Mother. And while he can't stop the declining influence of the Monarchy, he will try to slow it down.

The Irish President and his wife Sabina, Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney will attend the Service at St Anne's in Belfast for Queen Elizabeth.

While I agree with this sentiment. Don't you find it abit awkward abit?. Im used to the "God save the Queen" and all that and now, it will no longer be that case. :((

Every time I've heard PRINCE OF WALES in the last few days I immediately, instinctively think they are discussing Charles...then I remember.

It's going to take some time.

Same for me. When I hear commentators on CNN talking about the Prince of Wales, and I look up to see William, my initial reaction is still 'what are you talking about, you silly person'. Then I remember, that's exactly who William is now.

It's definitely going to take time. It'll probably be into next year for me.

Even the royal commentators on TV keep saying "Prince Charles ... er, King Charles". It's all going to take a while to get used to.

No, as I'm not British. It's not a song I sing in my daily life or even hear on a semi-regular basis. Here in the US, as you well know, that tune is "My Country Tis of Thee," but the last time I sang that song, I was probably in kindergarten.

When I see "HM The King", I automatically read it as "Her Majesty The King" before catching myself "wait, no, it's 'His', you moron!'

At the service in Belfast yesterday, the Congregation also sang the second stanza of the anthem, which has more gendered pronouns than the first one. I highlighted below the changes that had to be made to both stanzas, which must have been non-trivial for people who are used to the previous version.

God save our gracious King!
Long live our noble King!
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the King!

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On him be pleased to pour;
Long may he reign:
May he defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the King!

I must admit that I was one of the people that remembered the King part but didnt change the pronouns.

I think that King Charles has been left wth a ton of "unpleasant decisions" to make because her late Majesty refused to modernise. For instance, I read in the online Daily Fail that there will be cuts at Clarence House and the staff there are not happy about that after they've been putting in overtime recently.

Obviously exhausted and easily irritated. Camilla, on the other hand, is an ocean of Calm.

This is why I think he could have used a couple more private days. There's too much stress (for anyone, really), and where his mother had astounding public self-control and the anomaly of being relatively unflappable, Charles has fully resumed the ancient family temper.

He’s always been like that.
But he is under the most immense stress at the moment. I can’t even imagine. We all know things will really begin to change now and he is 74 in a couple of months. I watched the procession today and saw him side on and thought: who is that old man? He’s lost his mother, he’s working like a demon and the crown for him is a poison chalice. Because he’s a transition monarch but so was Edward VII and he was great fun and really pulled the monarchy up the boot straps. Problem for Charles is Queen left it in a brilliant state and a lot raised on peoples personal respect for her.

Is it really that serious for him to respond to that?! I mean come on who hasn't dealt with a leaky pen before?. I bet Camilla found the minor incident abit funny, not hahaha funny but you know what I mean.

Give him some slack, the last few days have been just crazy for him. He's an old man with some temper, we can't deny that, but some understanding would be welcome.

He reminds me of his late father during one the unfamous " typically Philip" moments.

They all have a temper: Harry, William, Charles. Queens father had a bit of a one too apparently. Philip could be legendary.

It was the second time this week he's had issues with a pen. I'd be frustrated as well.

Everyone has a temper, but some are extremely capable of controlling theirs.

Okay, you tell us how well you do controlling your temper when the eyes and cameras of the entire world are trained on you as you make official visits to the four nations over which you've become monarch less than a week after your mother, one of the most iconic figures in history, died.

Yes they are. But this is him anyway and he is under immense stress. He’s aged a decade in the last week. Have some compassion. He’s always had his moments. We know this about him. He’s a human. We all have.

Getting ink over your hand is rather unpleasant - especially if you have a representative role and other activities to move onto. Camilla did receive a different pen, so had no issues at all herself.

And, while it of course was not professional. He is under much stress right now, so a moment like this can happen. And I'm sure such minor irritations will happen more often (even under less stressful circumstances).

It's not that he let it ruin the rest of his day.
