Belgian King and Queen Visit the Province of Antwerp

Yesterday, Tuesday February 26, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde paid a visit to the Province of Antwerp.
The first stop was in the municipality of Duffel where they visited the Art Center De Loods, a social-artistic art project for people with a psychological vulnerability.
The King and the Queen toured the center and talked to the patients who were painting, modeling and drawing.
The following visit was in the municipality of Lier where they made a tour of the Beguinage. The Flamish “Beguinages were closed courts where widows and unmarried women led a religiously inspired but independent life. There was self-government led by a grandmother”.
In 1998 the Beguinage was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde toured Lier, visited the Saint Margarita church and met with the residents gathered outside the church.
The visit ended with a reception held in the City Hall of Herentals. The King and the Queen signed the Golden Book and also greeted the people gathered in the Grote Markt.
