To commemorate the 95th Birthday of His Majesty King Michael of Romania, Royal Orders, Honours and Decorations have been conferred upon a variety of receivers from Romania and abroad at two ceremonies that took place in the Hall of Honour at Peleș Castle.

The honours were handed out by HRH Crown Princess Margareta – Custodian of the Crown – and in attendance were her husband, Prince Radu and her sister, Princess Maria. Romanian Royal Decoration ceremonies are held twice a year: on the King’s and the Crown Princess’s birthdays.

The arrival of Crown Princess Margareta was heralded by a fanfare as she was escorted by her husband into the beautiful, wood-panelled Hall of Honours.

During the first ceremony, the King Michael I Medal for Loyalty was bestowed upon Calin Madal, an Orthodox Parish Priest from Săvârşin and also to Mother Pachomius, from the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western Europe, who lives at the residence of the King. This medal is given out to members of King Michael’s household, who have worked in service for the King for five or more years.

In the second ceremony, the Order of the Crown of Romania (in the rank of Knight) was conferred upon Professor Florin Stan, rector of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, and also to Mr. John Florescu. This Order was originally created by King Carol I in 1881 to commemorate of the establishment of the Kingdom of Romania.

Afterwards, the Royal Decoration of the Cross of the Romanian Royal House was awarded to two Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary – one of the Italian Republic and the other of the Federal Republic of Germany. This particular Decoration is awarded to those who have “continuously supported the work of the Romanian Royal Family” (source)

The Royal Decoration of Nihil Sine Deo (“Nothing Without God”) was conferred upon two renowned contemporary composers, Vladimir Cosma and Sabin Pautza.

The Order of the Crown of Romania (in the rank of Commander) was conferred upon Sir George Iacobescu, Dr. Anneli Ute Gabanyi and the famous Romanian Soprano, Virginia Zeani.
