Princess Kristine Bernadotte, the third wife of Prince Carl Bernadotte, passed away at her home in Spain on November 4.

Her death has been described as sudden, with a memorial service taking place today at the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in Calahonda, where the Princess, who was 82, lived with her husband until his death in 2003. The date of her funeral – expected to be attended by the Swedish and Norwegian royals – has not been announced, but will take place at the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace in Sweden. She will then be buried alongside her husband at the royal cemetery at Haga.

Princess Kristine was married to Prince Carl, only son of Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland and Princess Ingeborg of Denmark, in 1978. As such, Prince Carl was the maternal uncle of King Harald V of Norway and King Albert II of Belgium.

The Princess was close to the Norwegian Royal Family, as was her husband. They were both frequent guests of King Harald and Queen Sonja at family events and routinely spent Christmas with the family in Norway.

Princess Kristine and Prince Carl did not have any children together.
