Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset have been interviewed by swedish media
"Life rings" is the Danish-Norwegian artist duo Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset's permanent contribution to the sculpture park at Djurgården.
The eight-meter-high tower of continuous lifebuoys is inspired by human community.
- It almost looks like a saving angel, says Dragset.
"Life rings" is acquired by Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation and will be part of the sculpture park that will grow on Djurgården. That it will be the artist duo's first public outdoor sculpture in Sweden feels completely in tune with their ideals, according to Ingar Dragset.
He says that they both think it's incredibly nice that art comes out where people are. You should not need a doctorate in art history to be able to go in and experience it at any museum. This is also an incredibly popular and well-visited park, so it is clear that it makes them happy as an artist that what they do is visible in that way, that it enters into a more everyday dialogue with the surroundings.

No, they are not Olympic rings, and not polkagrisar (Swedish stick candy) either. The new artwork Life rings is now being inaugurated in Stockholm. The 49 lifebuoys, which are stacked on top of each other, measure eight meters and are cast in stainless steel. The Berlin-based artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset immediately accepted the assignment, but were not entirely delighted with the placement. When they saw the place at Djurgården, via photos and video calls over the internet, it was covered with coppice. - They have not had the opportunity to come to Sweden due to the pandemic, so there was a bit of persuasion in the beginning before they understood that it is a parade ground, says Sara Sandström Nilsson, executive director for Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation. According to the foundation, Life rings is "engineering of the highest quality". The work should symbolize that we humans are dependent on each other.
https://gramho.com/media/2590771301532574926

Jonas Sjöman, site manager for Aros Water, says that they have worked for months to build the foundation on the statue and also built temporary roads to get the artwork in place.
"It is probably almost Djurgården's best place", he says.

Daniel's speech, he said among other things:
"When we founded Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation in 2019, we wanted to connect with Karl XIV Johan's original ambition: Joy, accessibility and inspiration.
And when we start today the establishment of a permanent sculpture park in the area, it somehow feels like the circles are closing. But the journey does not stop here: I look forward to being involved in managing and building on what is now taking shape.
Art means a lot to me, as it does to many others. Not just for the experience here and now, but for everything it stands for. Art tells about our past, it describes our present. Maybe it can also help us take on our future."

Alice Aycock's sculpture "Devil Whirls", which was at The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation's exhibition last year, has now been donated to Borås by entrepreneur duo Paul Frankenius and Joakim Hedin in collaboration with Sparbanksstiftelsen Foundation Sjuhärad.
Borås turns 400 years old and receives a seven meter high sculpture for SEK 6 million as a birth gift.
"Expensive sculptures are a cheap way to build a city", says Paul Frankenius, regional business profile and one of the donors.
"Devil Whirls" is part of the series "Turbulence" and was exhibited by Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation at Djurgården in Stockholm last year.
"I saw "Devil Whirls" at Djurgården and thought it would fit so well here. Borås was previously seen as a dusty industrial city, sandwiched between Gothenburg and Jönköping. The sculpture reflects the creative power, curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit that has always existed in Borås", says Paul Frankenius.

My new fave sculpture is also Scandinavian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset’s very first public sculpture in Sweden True to form, Elmgreen & Dragset here present a functional object in an unexpected way, giving it new symbolic meaning... Their sculpture "Life Rings" consists of a cluster of 49 lifebuoys, interconnected in a circuit that extends towards the sky It appears as if each lifering births another, like the act of saving a life has a multiplied effect and also saves more lives as we're all dependent on one another. I'm part of a 4 woman team at The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation who will be hosting daily guided tours of "Life Rings". Welcome!

Rosendal Sculpture Park - a new royal initiative at the Royal Djurgården
It all started in Umeå, more precisely in 2014 when Umeå was the Capital of Culture and the crown princess couple visited Umedalen's Sculpture Park. The idea of creating something similar began to sprout and during the years 2016–2018, temporary sculpture exhibitions were held with Tony Cragg, Eva Hild and Jaume Plensa in collaboration with the Royal Djurgården Administration. But last year, 2020, the shovel was put in the ground for the first permanent sculpture in the newly formed sculpture park at Rosendal on Djurgården.
The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation is one of many royal foundations. It works to promote cultural activities in Sweden.

Victoria spoke about the Foundation at her interview in Svenska Dagbladet a couple of weeks ago.

In 2019, Victoria and Daniel founded the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation, which is funded by private donations, for the purpose to "promote and make culture accessible in Sweden". The hope is to be able to establish a permanent sculpture park in the Rosendal area at Royal Djurgården and so far two permanent sculptures have been erected, most recently by the Scandinavian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset whose "Life rings" (2021) is a 7.5 meter high sculpture in stainless steel and concrete.
How has "Life rings" been received? Were there critical voices raised when it was performed?
Victoria says that she can certainly imagine that, but she hasn't heard it personally. It is probably so and she fully understands that. She hopes that it is positive and that you can feel that you get a new experience when you go on your everyday walks, that it can be a new feature for a conversation or a discussion.
Or maybe just that someone gets angry?
Victoria laughs and says Yes, that it adds something! Then it is the case that the two works that exist today are created by internationally great artists. It's fun that Victoria and Daniel with their Foundation can offer it in Stockholm.
What is the ambition of the sculpture park?
Victoria says that Daniel and she have had a longing to contribute to the culture in some way for a long time. They felt that this is a way, to experience something together, outdoors and in this beautiful nature.
The foundation is the fourth royal foundation to promote culture, which can be set against seventeen for research.
Victoria thinks it is so fun that there is also something that is left over from our time, which tells something about the time we live in now and the issues that may be big for us. This is a historic place that has developed. But you have to be careful. The thing which is funny is that Karl XIV Johan had planned that it would be just a sculpture park around Rosendal when he had it built. It is therefore extra fun that they are in just that place with the Foundation's sculptures.

Press release from The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation (PREKS):

Artist of the Year at Royal Djurgården in Stockholm: Yinka Shonibare
The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation is pleased to present Yinka Shonibare – one of the world’s most acclaimed and successful artists today. Thanks to a private donation, the Foundation is acquiring a new site-specific sculpture, the third work in the permanent sculpture park that the Foundation, together with the Royal Djurgården Administration, is establishing in the Rosendal area.
Shonibare’s sculpture will be inaugurated on 2 June, and a programme of educational activities and events will be offered until 25 September, in collaboration with other institutions. Confirmed partners for 2022 are: Drottningholm Slottsteater, the Embassy of Nigeria, the Konstfack University of Arts, Craft and Design, Liljevalchs, Moderna Museet, Nationalmuseum, Rosendal Garden, the Stockholm School of Economics, the British Embassy, the Museum of Ethnography and the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm.
Sara Sandström Nilsson, director of PREKS, adds, “Most cultures have evolved from several, people are multifaceted, and therefore it is important to challenge stereotypical notions of ethnicity. We hope Yinka Shonibare’s new sculpture and our collaborative activities will inspire many exciting conversations and insights.”
“To have the opportunity to make sculpture in the public space feels extra important. You can engage people in so many different ways. Unlike institutions that can sometimes be considered elitist, public art is accessible to everyone, and that’s something that’s important to me,” says Yinka Shonibare.
The Artistic Council’s motivation for 2022 reads:
“The works of Yinka Shonibare can be perceived as playful and seductive, but beneath the surface they carry layers of history. Shonibare is a storyteller, and his personal language is the fabric prints that, despite other origins, have come to epitomise an entire continent. By questioning our traditional cultural codes, Shonibare highlights complex global relationships and conveys a new picture of the ingrained and self-evident.”

Press release from The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation
THE OFFICIAL NAMING:
THE PRINCESS ESTELLE SCULPTURE PARK AT ROYAL DJURGÅRDEN
Ever since it was founded in 2019, the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation has presented new artists every year at Royal Djurgården in Stockholm. It has now been announced that the sculpture park created together with the Royal Djurgården administration, will be called The Princess Estelle Sculpture Park. This year’s sculpture by the award-winning and internationally celebrated artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, will be the third permanent work in the collection.
On 2 June, HRH Prince Daniel will unveil the new work Wind Sculpture in Bronze I by this year’s artist, Yinka Shonibare CBE.
Shonibare’s sculpture will be installed between Rosendal Palace and Ståthållarängen at Royal Djurgården.
“The Foundation has a long-term plan for the development of the Princess Estelle Sculpture Park, and Yinka Shonibare’s sculpture represents a significant part in this project. This year, we will also be offering an exceptionally rich programme of events, thanks to collaborations with thirteen different organisers.”- Sara Sandström Nilsson, executive director, Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation.

THIS YEAR’S EVENTS
HRH Prince Daniel, British Ambassador Judith Gough, Nigerian Ambassador to Stockholm B. B. Hamman, Sara Sandström Nilsson and Yinka Shonibare CBE will speak at the inauguration ceremony on 2 June at 1 pm. From 2 June to 25 September, various public programmes and events will be offered.

THIS YEAR’S SCULPTURE
Standing two metres high Wind Sculpture in Bronze I, in the form of a large three-dimensional textile, has abstracted leaf patterns across the entire surface. This is a reference to Dutch wax batik fabrics – a signature motif of Shonibare’s art.
”The mixed origins of the fabric – factory-made by the Dutch, based on Indonesian batiks sold to Britain’s West African colonies, embraced there and considered in the world’s eyes as authentic African products, make a perfect vehicle to inspire conversations about our multi-layered identities and global interdependence.” - Yinka Shonibare CBE.

Art workshop with Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation
In connection with the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation inaugurating its third sculpture at Djurgården, Tekniska Museet offers its visitors creative workshops during the summer. We take our starting point in the British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare's sculpture Wind sculpture in bronze I, which is inspired by African batik fabrics and the role of the fabric in the colonial shipping trade. With the sculpture as inspiration, we draw, cut and paste our own patterns and learn about how these can be repeated indefinitely with the help of mathematics. During the summer, a joint work of art emerges in the museum.

The catalogue for 2022 has been published.
Sara Sandström Nilsson, Executive Director of the Foundation, writes in it
"The sculpture expresses dynamic movement despite being static, the seemingly light piece of fabric fluttering in the wind is, in fact, made of heavy bronze. The fabric can be seen as a bright canvas that captures not only the breeze, but also currents in society.
To present Shonibare’s multifaceted oeuvre, the Foundation has this year chosen to collaborate with thirteen different institutions in Stockholm. Through exhibitions, films, dance, workshops, and lectures, they will contribute to increased awareness of Shonibare and offer new perspectives on his theme. The Foundation would not have been able to achieve this comprehensive project on its own, and we are deeply grateful to everyone involved for their commitment.
Shonibare wants his work to be thought-provoking, and it is the foundation’s hope that the new sculpture and the activities organised around it will lead to increased openness and curiosity – and perhaps to completely different words of wisdom on the next embroidery".

Yinka Shonibare tells
"This new sculpture, Wind Sculpture in Bronze I, specially commissioned for the Royal Djurgarden in Stockholm, is a development on my Wind Sculpture series. I was fascinated by the notion of harnessing a gust of wind and capturing it in a moment in time; to attempt to capture the weightlessness of something intangible as air with a medium as heavy and substantial as bronze; traditionally considered a classical material."

Shonibare's sculpture is donated by Mari & Thomas Eldered, installed between Rosendal Castle and Ståthållarängen.

About The Princess Estelle Sculpture Park
"The Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation launched the sculpture project at Royal Djurgården in 2020, and organised an exhibition with Alice Aycock that same summer. The patrons of the Foundation acquired one of the exhibited sculptures, Hoop-La. This was the first permanent work acquired for the future sculpture park at Rosendal. The second sculpture in the collection, Life Rings by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, was acquired in 2021 thanks to gifts from the Båge and Frankenius families and one donor who wishes to be anonymous. The Rosendal area will now be further enriched by Yinka Shonibare’s sculpture, which could be acquired thanks to a generous donation from the Eldered family.
The Foundation will develop and grow organically and dynamically. Its main purpose is to create a unique, permanent sculpture park in Stockholm and, in connection with new acquisitions, to organise events and educational activities relating to art, and to encourage interest in and offer knowledge about art. The Foundation is committed to promoting awareness of contemporary art and enhancing Sweden’s cultural standing in Europe."
