Maybe Mary chose a large hat to keep the snow off her face. LOL

Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte both wore hats so I assume it was practical for all 3 given the wintry weather outside.

I liked Mary's hat and she is one royal who has fined tuned her royal style and has continued to nail it where others only get it half right.

The hat is identical to the kind she used to wear as a young Crown Princess, I didn't like that sort of hat then and I don't like it now.

The rest of the outfit and the colour is stunning, and she looks like a Queen.

It looks very similar to the hat she wore during the festivities leading up to her wedding.
