The Dutch Royal Family has celebrated Koningsdag 2023, the celebration of the monarch’s birthday, in Rotterdam, in the province of South Holland.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and two of their three daughters Princess Catharina-Amalia and Princess Ariane, were joined by Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, Prince Maurits and Princess Marilène, Prince Bernhard and Princess Annette, Prince Floris and Princess Aimée, Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Princess Anita.
Princess Alexia couldn’t attend this year’s Koningsdag due to exams at the United World College of the Atlantic (UWC Atlantic College) in Wales.
Upon the arrival in Afrikaanderwijk, a neighborhood of Rotterdam, the Royals were welcomed by Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of the city and Jaap Smit, the King’s Commissioner of South Holland. The Royals were also greeted by children from five schools who performed a special song for the event.
During the two hours of the visit the Royal Family walked through the city center participating in the activities organized for the event. They attended a representation of different cultures and nationalities such as “a mix of Surinamese kotomisis, Hindustani dancers, Moroccan folkloric percussionists, belly dance and salsa”.
There was also time for sport events like basketball, kickboxing and street football. The King kicked off a football match on the street football field while Princess Catharina-Amalia played basketball.
Then the Royals took a water taxi to visit the northern part of Rotterdam where they attended acrobatic tricks performed by students of Circus Rotjeknor and the acrobats of the international company Compagnie XY.
The celebrations ended in the Binnenrotte square with a concert full of artists.
