Crown Prince Frederik Named Patron of 2018 Ice Hockey World Championships

Ahead of the Denmark v Sweden ice hockey match in Cologne, Germany on Sunday as part of the group stage of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, the Danish Crown Prince was announced as patron of next year’s IIHF World Championship.

“It is a great honour for Danish ice hockey that Crown Prince Frederik has committed to being the patron for the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. We are proud to have the attention and support of the Danish Royal Family for a sporting event the size of which the World Championship will be,” said the President of the Danish Ice Hockey Association, Henrik Bach Nielsen, during a press conference announcing the appointment.

Crown Prince Frederik said that it was easy for him to agree to be patron of the 2018 Championship because “ice hockey is an impressive sport” and that the Danish team, and Danish players in the NHL, “has been doing so well for so many years”. 2018 will be the first time the Championships have been hosted in Denmark.

The Prince later met the Danish team and watched their game against Sweden, however they lost 2-4 and will not be advancing further into the competition.
