Apparently part of the "documentary" will see the programme compare coverage of Meghan and her sister in law to see how it was different and why they had no choice but to leave.

I'm obviously not their target audience but I can't imagine that is going to be thrilling watching!

Seriously?! Lol [emoji23] Sounds like must see TV. How very exciting. This was covered in the Oprah interview too. Waity Katie and all that….

Like we don’t already know this- whatever it is- is slanted in favor of the Sussexes. They’ll cherry pick whatever makes their case and conveniently leave out anything that doesn’t. This is not some unbiased look.

It won’t be, but I’ll be curious to see what headlines they select. When this has been brought up in the past, they’ve always selected headlines about Catherine ten years and three children into her marriage, when she has earned a lot of trust and credibility.

When she was a long-time girlfriend, then a fiancée and then a new wife, she was not treated with much deference at all. Aside from the “Waity Kaity” thing which Meghan dismissed in the Oprah interview as not a hard thing to go through, there were headlines about her Uncle Gary that must have hurt and embarrassed her family, intrusive photos of her siblings. The tabloids were laughing at James Middleton’s business struggles and painting him as a privileged fail son, during a time we now know he was suffering from severe depression. Her sister’s backside was discussed in all major media. Topless photos were taken of her in a place where she had every expectation of privacy and then people debated whether she deserved it or not because she was outside. The tabloid media wasn’t great to Catherine, she just rose above it long enough to earn some respect.

Meghan has had to be awfully selective to present the idea that she was victimized by the press in ways no one else in the family ever has been.

This does not bode well. Catherine does not deserve this, I am not saying that Meghan deserved some of the media stories she didn't, but to bring up all that is not a good look for Meghan.

They are assuming that the palace will not react.
If they do a personal attack on the Princess of Wales , I pity them.

I do hope this comparison process doesn't throw Catherine under a bus. Meghan was treated badly by the press, I'll absolutely agree with her there, but she doesn't need to defend herself by tearing another woman down.

And I doubt William would respond well. If the show attacks Catherine, H&M can forget the bridge rebuilding they supposedly want to do once the show and the book are done.

I mean Kate had to deal with this for years without any protection. But according to some, it’s not that important.

Just to be clear- I’m amused that this is supposed to be must see tv: A comparison of who the media was meaner to.

Catherine absolutely does not deserve this- if it indeed happens.

I think dragging Catherine into this would be a huge mistake on every level.

Meghan had to put up with bad coverage too, but doing a comparison AGAIN is a bad look. I hope this is not an in depth repeat of Oprah. Ugh.

As another poster has said every royal partner has been dragged through the press.

It is almost like a rite of passage. Kates family had to take a battering as well.
If this is the case I really do believe it makes Meghan look petty.
But maybe I am prejudging, it might not be a comparison as such possibly just showing what royal brides have to encounter.

Rereading the blurb to this series it references the "British Commonwealth".

They really haven't got a clue have they?

Let's hope these are just the teasers to get people to watch and the actual content is much tamer
and that that's the reason they air it on two days and not one episode a week, because i'm sure that would normally be a much better strategy if they expected every episode to have impact by itself
or is that done because the entire series needs to be 'out' before the book is published..

we'll soon find out

(but i hope they don't resort to petty comparisons, surely a strong independent woman doesn't need that..)

Yes there is confusion between what was the Empire and Commonwealth.

Even Meghan and Harry confused it with one of their video speeches after they had gone to live in the USA. I couldn't believe that Harry didn't know the difference but he didn't.

Honestly- I listened to a few seconds of the clip- made it right to the part where she showed her cluelessness about Diana and had to turn it off. Lol I have no idea who this woman is tbh. She certainly isn’t known to me.

This is more like soap opera drama to Americans. “Bothered” is, I think, an overstatement to how many people really care.
If it is as inconsequential as a soap opera then why do some observers in the US media feel the need to be so vicious about the British Monarchy? I don't get it.

I would hope that such people are a minority & that most view the British Monarchy in the same way that I view foreign monarchies or Appalachia. Interesting because of their history & culture.

It would be nice if they could just focus on their lives since leaving the UK. Their time as working royals has been done to death, and Meghan and Harry themselves had their say with the Oprah interview.

It would be such a pleasant surprise if they pulled off an entertaining, charming series that didn’t hinge on the drama with the Royal Family, didn’t make digs at anyone and showed that they’ve used the past few years to build happy, productive lives. There’s a market for that sort of thing provided the subjects are charismatic and savvy enough, which I’m not convinced the Sussexes are. If they could pull it off though it would be better for their long term success as public figures.

I'm in Canada, watch a lot of Canadian and American shows, and I've learned to mute or change the channel when a piece about the BRF comes on. Not because I don't want to hear it, but because I know it will be so full of inaccuracies, I'll end up wanting to throw my mug of tea at the telly.

Even CNN's coverage of the Queen's funeral, where they had a line-up of 'experts' on hand, was pretty cringeworthy at points.

I am an American and almost every time I see one of our programs talk about the BRF, I want to throw something at the TV. What has happened to research? I wish they would research what they are talking about. They even botch something as simple as name pronunciation. I remember when Prince Louis was born and the news commentator pronounced his name with an "s" on the end instead of an "e". We Americans pronounce "Louis" with an "s" at the end, but I have always heard it pronounced with an "e" on the end by the British. I seriously wanted to crawl under the chair I was sitting in. As an American, it is embarrassing to me.

Our local Boston news gave glowing coverage to the Earthshot awards but when they mentioned Ellie Goulding, they kept saying she was also a friend of “Princess Eugene”

Sometimes it’s so bad it’s funny.

You have said what I was thinking. Could somebody tell me why an American TV person is so bothered about the British Monarchy. The USA didn’t want the monarchy and got rid of it, fair enough, so why are they so bothered about it.
I think there is an element get your own house in order before telling other countries how to live.
Or is this another example of a nobody looking for their 5 minutes of fame.

I think it is a matter of looking for 15 minutes of fame. Most people I know here in America either love the British Royal Family or are indifferent.

Some Americans will watch the docu-drama just for the soap opera drama (not me) but it won't affect their feelings of the majority one way or another about the Monarchy. Many Americans just like reality TV and this will fit the bill. But honestly, it does not matter what the American opinion of the British Royal family is, even from people who love them like me. What matters is that of the British people.

I confess I'll watch it just so I'm "in the loop" but it will be with a critical eye nonetheless.

And after the World Cup Soccer, Amsterdam Undercover etc. etc.

I haven't made up my mind if I'll watch - it certainly won't be on the 8th when it drops though - I've got two figure skating competitions that are far more important and interesting to pay attention to next week on top of starting a new job on Monday. Chances are, I won't get around to binge-watching it until after all 6 episodes have dropped, but I will be following along in here as others give their reviews.

I will somehow fit in both this series and the Grand Prix Final in Turin, though my interests will be similarly divided [emoji3]

Well, there's the GPF/JGPF and Golden Spin next week!!!! And my fave discipline is pairs, so I'm really interested in Golden Spin.

Sorry, Harry & Megs will be taking the backseat to watching what I can of the skating and trying to make a good impression on the new job/not fall asleep or allow myself to be distracted during the training class, lol.

That's odd because I know of quite a few American people who have a strong dislike for the couple - they are certainly not "indifferent" towards them!

The Sunday papers are reporting that the King and Prince William are holding "crisis talks" about the Netflix series, and that William in particular wants to hit back if (when?) unfair allegations are made.

I would not be surprised if William does hit back. I didn't expect him to comment with Lady Hussey

Well, the Telegraph claims this
Royal family unflustered about Sussexes on Netflix as there are no bombshells to reveal

Archive
(...)

Royal sources have described promised bombshells as “very wearying”, with the palace hoping not to have to “engage” directly or formally with any claims made about the family.

In the firing line, The Telegraph understands, will be the media, the institution and to some extent the UK public, with an examination of its culture and the “state of the British Commonwealth today”.

(...)

I can't remember which papers (maybe the Sun if not Mirror), but there's also claim that the Sussexes plan to mend the bridge after the documentary and book released (whatever it means).

At this point I don't think I can even trust the Times nor Telegraph (can't remember which but one of the came with the scoop that Anne would get RM position), more so tabloids like Mirror or the Sun. Plus all those sensationalist headlines prior the Crown, so this could either be another attempt to sell papers or some sort of PR move by Netflix to attract audience's curiosity.

I honestly thought responding to the Lady Susan's debacle is a mistake (many have come out defending her instead of attacking the BRF), but on the other hand his team might not want it to overshadow the Earthshot.

Btw, what is "British Commonwealth"? The Commonwealth Realms? Or The Commonwealth of Nations?

I do believe if Catherine is dragged down in this Docu-Series, William will react. It could also be a case of the BRF thinking/saying 'give a dog enough rope and it will hang itself.' H&M are heading for a very lonely life ahead. Not sure if I am going to watch the Series although I would like to see how many untruths I can pick up.

I think Catherine will prefer not to engage so she'll advise her husband not to react publicly (and I believe he will listen to his wife).

Your last few words are the tipping point, as we know from the Oprah interview they are not known for accuracy. This is where the danger lies, because it did not matter how many times people were told that what they said was wrong they still wanted to believe what Meghan said.

I really hope they do not go down that road.

One would expect The Telegraph to know better as the term "British Commonwealth" has not been in use since 1949.

Anyway, do the Sussexes now feel equipped to judge "British people's culture" and "the state of the Commonwealth" too? Their sense of self-importance is really going off the charts.

I'll watch it. I watch all "water cooler" TV things. For anyone who doesn't know that term, it means a show that people talk about the next day at work or wherever they congregate. I don't want to miss anything. This is sort of like OJ Simpson and Al Cowlings in the white Bronco, but with advance notice.
