Queen Máxima's Daytime Fashion Part 21: December 2023 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Its a really lovely colour ,the hat is a bit too much for such a low key in door event.
Both yesterday and today she visited organizations that work with refugees... is it really necessary to wear flashy outfits, big hats and jewelry to meet people who are refugees in your country?

The previous generation of queens had one style of dress, but that style has been evolving in the younger generations. I can't imagine any other queen or princess of this generation, nor those who always wear hats on more formal occasions, visiting associations that help refugees dressed like that.

Look number 2 today, when meeting the President of Nigeria:

Not a fan. Very bland blouse and the trousers are rather 'high'.

Why should a visit of the queen to organisations working with refugees who are taking up activities to participate and build their future in the Netherlands not require the queen to dress as a queen? I would be more concerned if she would tone it down just because the workers are refugees - note that the clients include (high-end) businesses, so her dress was very representative. Moreover, I am sure many of them will have made an additional effort (as the Netherlands might be an egalitarian society, many cultures are less so), so I am glad Máxima did the same.

Dress codes consist of dressing appropriately for the event you are attending, depending on the nature of the event and the time or place where it is held or the people you are going to meet with.

Wear bright colors, big hats and flashy jewelry to visit refugees, but wear a pantsuit and be disheveled to receive a Head of State... there is no coherence.

Elizabeth II belonged to another era and continued to use the same dress codes throughout her life, but the younger generations have been modifying it and that modification was completed when she died. The most formal looks, the hats, the important jewelry... have been left for the most formal events, state visits, military events... while at other events they dress more in line with the type of event and the people they are going to share it with. Nowadays I can't imagine the Princess of Wales visiting a refugee association dressed like she goes to Ascot.

The same could be said about Queen Mathilde and Queen Mary, who when they started out as princesses were always dressed more formally and have been evolving and adapting their dress codes to the events they hold.

If you look at all the clothes that Máxima has worn this week, there is no coherence... it seems that she dresses as she feels like that day without taking into account the type of event. Today at a fun event with children she wears a more relaxed dress code, but much darker than previous days.

I'm not a fan of leather being worn at daytime events but the coat coves most of it and not a bad hair day.

I like the dress too. The headpiece OTOH is indeed absurd. Totally fine to get something fun for King's Day, but this one seems out of proportion and randomly arranged. (It reminds me Beatrice's butterfly hat in certain wedding......and now I actually think that one is slightly better with a balanced and harmonious design.)

Her outfit is a bit underwhelming due to her choice of wearing a cardigan. While her hairband is indeed a bit weird, the butterflies are a refence to Emmen, the butterfly city.

From the daywear during the Spanish royal visit to King's Day, it's like one step forward and three steps backwards to me. The article below calls her a vision in green but I hate that hideous leaf butterfly hybrid hat. Feels she is an ad for a backyard project plants product.

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands is a vision in green on King's Day

It doesn't work because from any distance it just seems like she has a bunch of leaves stuck on her head. Like she wandered out of a production of Midsummer Night's Dream.
I'm thinking more of a supporting role in the TV series Swamp Thing. The hat doesn't go with absolutely anything or anyone on that group picture just because is green. I know she has an affinity for DIY Etsy-looking accessories, but a leaf-like butterfly hat? She needs an intervention from her daughters, they all look stunning, elegant and classy while mom Maxima is the odd person in the picture from the head up.

Now, if you remove the green butterflies and strip it down to the base, that matches her sweater and gloves, then she's a hit and not a miss. As Coco Channel alleged quote says, "before you leave the house, look at yourself in the mirror and take one thing off."

The red dress from earlier would have been perfectly fine for the meeting ,not crazy about look number 2.
This shade of teal is not her color, it just ages her. Her hair seems to need a trip to the salon for a wash, too. I like Maxima and love when she glams up, but this love is not blind on some of her fashion choices. It's like she's all over the place.

Several years ago, on this board, there was a lengthy discussion of a particularly eccentric/dramatic dress which then-Queen Beatrix was wearing. Such dresses were dubbed FQO- for Queens only. Certainly Maxima’s hat is FQO. And it’s delightful on her- she has the stature and personality to carry it off. What a sad world if all hats were pill boxes or turbans or broad brims! More FQO fashion, please…

Even though part of the point of Kingsday is to be a bit silly, Max dresses outrageously and dramatically enough of the rest of the time that she really didn't need to go above board today.

"Outrageous hats" are not exactly in short supply in royaldom. She could have picked anything that would have passed muster at Ascot, and instead she's a mad tree (to quote Emma Corrin).

I wondered how the cardigan stays in place during the day. I guess it is somehow attached to the dress because otherwise it wouldn't remain at the exact same position all the time.

It is not Máxima’s fault that perhaps some other queens have thrown much decorum overboard and prefer to dress like the secretary. Though Queen Camilla and Queen Mathilde do often use hats and gloves. And for Queen Mary it is too early to tell. Queen Máxima dresses up to meet people, as those people expect to see a Queen.

Her hat of today is a nice gesture. As pointed out above, Emmen is known as the butterfly city. It is certainly more festive than her showing up in a suit. And it is more functional too. Queen Beatrix saw her outfits as her uniform, she will always be recognized quickly by all those around. The same now goes for Máxima.

Outfits are planned long on advance, as we know from Josine Evers. Though perhaps it is more difficult to always get it right when you actually dress up than when you simply wear thirteen in a dozen fast fashion from a European retailer.

But as long pointed out here, Maxima doesn't always "dress up" to meet people, particularly if it's a domestic visit, and sometimes has hair that no secretary (they're usually called administrative assistants now) would normally have, let alone a queen.

And her wide variations of style have left her only "uniform" impression as "high-energy", when it works, and some less-flattering descriptors when it doesn't. She's ebullient and dresses like it, but "decorum" is not the first word that comes to mind when I think of her.

It's perfectly possible to be a queen and dignified in flamboyant couture, fast fashion, or a paper bag, but it depends on the effort of the wearer...

Especially next to WA, the vibrancy and choice of outfit is too much. The King husband should have taken center stage, not the consort ...

I really like the King’s Day outfit apart from the size of the headband. The green dress is very beautiful and I don’t object to the cardigan.

I could not agree more. The hat is definitely whimsical, but I think Maxima has the personality to carry it off. Max is wearing this hat, and not the other way around.

Queen Máxima at the King's Day celebration today, April 27.

I like the dress (Natan) and the cardigan, the hat piece can be considered funny, to me it's rather absurd:

I do like the overall look. The dress is very nice, and query if the cardigan might be replaced with a cropped jacket in white / creme.

If one were to follow that through, Maxima would never be able to appear alongside W-A!

Mr. Vermeulen spoke to RTL Boulevard. He said that HM telephoned him and asked if he had something with a butterfly print -due to the association with the city. He said he did not. They ultimately settled for the moss green fabric with natural patterns, and the idea was to have the butterflies floating on top, with the hat. Berry Rutjes was asked for that design. She spoke to RTL too and seemed very proud.

Other than the headpiece I thought queen Maxima looked lovely for the celebrations!

Am I the only one that gets nervous when this thread gets updated, and you are about to open the link?
I breathe a sigh of relief; the black color looks good on her although she is like a bit awkward smiling. And that hat is fine, but I would prefer for her to have a bigger wing. Like I wanted Maxima to go for full Supreme in the Coven*

*An USA TV mini-series where each member in the coven was in sorceress black couture and unique black hats like out of a runaway

A Fedora hat seems too informal for the occassion, no hat would have been better than this one IMO. The long skirt-pantalon is an odd construction and too tight in the upper part. Somehow HM managed to make the outfit look messy, which is an achievement considering it is all black.

The jacket was apparently worn at the funeral of Queen Juliana in 2004. The fedora and skirt were worn in 2020 at the same occassion. Source: modekoninginmaxima.

The hat apart, the overall effect is rather severe. It reminds me of several outfits Princess Charlene used to favour a few years back. It’s a serious moment of commemoration so something slightly simpler rather than costume like might have been better.

There's a lot going on with this look. Where do we look first? It's too busy.
