Meghan’s Right Royal Seal of Approval…From The Queen’s Corgis!

To conclude their engagement day, Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle sat down with the BBC’s Mishal Husain on Monday afternoon for their official engagement interview.

During the interview, the couple discussed their relationship over the past eighteen months, what they are looking forward to in the future, and their respective families’ reactions to their relationship – and disclosed what may have been an important moment in gaining Queen Elizabeth’s approval.

“The corgis took to you straight away. I’ve spent the last 33 years being barked at. This one walks in, absolutely nothing…” Prince Harry revealed when they were asked about Meghan’s meetings with his grandmother. Meghan, who has two of her own dogs (one of which has joined her on her permanent move to the UK), confirmed the Queen’s corgis “just lay on [my] feet during tea, it was very sweet.”

Prince Harry and Ms Markle were set up on a blind date by an unnamed mutual friend in July 2016, and had ‘back-to-back’ dates in London before Harry was able to convince Meghan to join him for a five-day camping trip in Botswana, where they got to know each other.

“It was a very authentic and organic way to get to know each other,” Meghan said, as both she and Harry did not know a great deal about the other prior to their initial meeting. Following that trip to Botswana, the couple have not spent more than two weeks apart from another, with Meghan making the trip to London as frequently as possible in between her Suits filming schedule (a task that Harry says has made Meghan not have “any idea what time zone you’ve been on for the last year and a half”).

Once their relationship became public in November 2016, the couple actively did not read any media reports about the relationship, with Meghan saying the initial reporting was “disheartening” in that it focused heavily on her ethnicity, but she was “really just proud of who I am and where I come from”.

When talking about their future roles within the Royal Family, Prince Harry was quick to praise his fiancee, saying he “knew for a fact” that she would be “unbelievably good at the job part of it” and she is “capable of anything”, and that they will make a “fantastic team”. Meghan on her part is excited to get to know the “different communities” in the UK and learn more about organisations working on “the same causes that I have always been passionate about” and learning about the Commonwealth.

When asked about their respective families, Meghan said that meeting Harry’s family had been wonderful and they were all very supportive and welcoming, making her “feel a part of not just the institution but also part of the family”. Prince Harry described his future mother-in-law, Doria Ragland, as “amazing”.

And the one thing everyone was wanting to know all day, how did Harry pop the question? Down on one knee, as they were preparing a roast chicken for dinner one night at ‘their cottage’ (Nottingham Cottage, on the grounds of Kensington Palace, where they will live) earlier in November. “It was so sweet and natural and very romantic,” Meghan described the proposal as, revealing she “barely let him finish proposing” before asking if she could say yes yet.
