Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Marks Fifty Years On The Throne
Brunei’s Sultan celebrated his Golden Jubilee this week with lavish ceremonies in the country’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.
On Thursday, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was joined on the royal chariot by his wife, Queen Saleha, for a procession through the streets that included members of Brunei’s military and musical performers. Tens of thousands lined the streets of the capital to catch a glimpse of the 71-year-old monarch, who took the throne on October 5, 1967.
Earlier in the day, the Sultan and members of the Royal Family gathered for a royal audience at the Palace. This was followed on Friday evening by a glittering gala banquet.
Among the foreign dignitaries attending the celebrations were the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the President of the Phillipines, Rodrigo Duterte, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of Thailand, Aung San Suu Kyi representing Burma, and dignitaries from Cambodia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Jordan, the UAE, and Oman.
The Sultan is the second longest reigning monarch in the world, following behind Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.
