Buckingham Palace announced this morning that the Duke of Edinburgh was last night admitted to hospital “as a precautionary measure” as he has contracted an infection from a “pre-existing condition”.

The Duke is currently receiving treatment at King Edward VII hospital in London, but was not admitted as an emergency. He is “in good spirits” according to the Palace spokesperson, who was unable to confirm when the 96-year-old would be discharged.

As a result of his hospitalisation, Prince Philip was unable to attend the State Opening of Parliament today nor the second day of Royal Ascot. The Prince of Wales stepped in for his father and accompanied Queen Elizabeth II to Parliament for the Queen’s Speech.

In June 2013 the Duke had exploratory surgery on his abdomen; the previous June he missed part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations after being admitted to hospital with a bladder infection (which reoccured the following month).
