Spanish Royals Award the Cervantes Prize 2008

As per tradition, yesterday Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Asturias, hosted a lunch at the Royal Palace for representatives of the letter-writing world to commemorate the grant of the Cervantes Prize 2008.

The Miguel de Cervantes Prize was founded in 1974 and it is awarded annually by the Ministry of Culture, whose main goal is to honour the lifetime achievement of an outstanding writer in the Spanish language.
The candidates are proposed by the Languages Academies of Spanish-speaking countries. The winner receives a monetary award of 90,000 Euros.

The prize is called Cervantes, in honour of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of the well known Spanish book “El Quijote”.

On April 23rd every year, coinciding with the date that commemorates Miguel de Cervantes death, King Juan Carlos presides over the delivery of this award at the Auditorium of the University of Alcalá de Henares, the city where Cervantes was born in 1547.
