The Duchess of Sussex's Maternity Fashion: October 2018 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Meghan looked lovely in the pleated black dress and white blazer.
And I loved her outfit for the stable wander.
Her red and cream dresses were quite nice but the blue was not as flattering on Meghan as it could have been. Another colour might have looked completely different.

In my opinion the choice of the blue dress was possibly a nod to local conservative style eg caftan. The colour is wonderful on her. The only problem: it was at least an inch too long! Lose styles like this always tend to shift a bit around the shoulders so what starts out looking perfect can end up dragging in the front or back. She does seem to struggle with fit sometimes, and this is another example. But I absolutely love the look.

My theory on the blue dress disaster is that there was some fabric left over from the living room curtains in the Frogmore Cottage renovation, she couldn't bear to see it go to waste, and she asked CH to whip something up for her. The scale of that print is much more drapery than something for someone as small boned as Meghan to wear.

And now I think of it, the biggest disappointment for me in the blue dress is that it came from Carolina Herrera, someone who can usually be trusted to create something lovely and tasteful, and whose work has suited Meghan beautifully in the past.

What bothers me is that the DM estimation of the the Valentino dress is £400 and the Gianvito Rossi gloves £405. Either the dress is underestimated of the gloves overestimated?

For me, the blue was a pretty, standout hue and the print also projected from the dress. There was no receding colour in the mix to soften Meghan's shape. The dress engulfed her. It did look comfortable though which is the best reason to choose a dress when one is pregnant.

sorry my mistake : What bothers me is that the DM estimation of the Valentino dress is £600 and the Gianvito Rossi gloves £405. Either the dress is underestimated of the gloves overestimated?]

The DM is pulling things out of thin air to rile people up. At most, this dress was about 15-20k (still a lot, mind you, but normal custom prices).
I can easily the Dior gown costing near the 40k easily.. I visited a local couture fashion house the other day- since we do business with them for our guests.
Just the type of fabric used and where it was made can impact the starting cost, than most likely it was hand made by a few seamstresses... add on top of that the work needed to sew the stones (not to mention the cost of the stones themselves)... we’re talking about a week long work on this outfit,. maybe even two- without the time it took to think of the design. Finally add in revenue percentage for the fashion house after all of the above is calculated.
So yea that dress can easily be worth twice what you listed. 90K could a bit of a stretch. But than again her wedding gown is rumored to have cost 100K. (And as my friend just reminded me, her engagement photos was 50k!).

Fair point.

Whilst the dress may not have cost as much as £90,000, it certainly appears to be a fair few tens of thousands.

I really do like the blue dress on her. The color is great on her and print is very pretty. It does a nice job at being flowy but without overpowering her or widening her pregnant shape.

But I do feel this could have been hemmed an inch or so. It seemed to drag here and there.

That blue rag is just sad. It swallows her whole! All that volume around a growing belly gives the impression of all-over weight rather than pregnancy. There’s a way too do loose and floaty maternity wear well, and that isn’t it. The color is nice and the print could be good in a different application, but the fabric needs a touch more weight to keep it from flopping around weirdly on her.

But guys, let’s also be honest about the red Valentino: it was not really that much better on a second glance. The red and the idea of the cape and sleeves and all made a great first impression, but the proportions were shabby. Not anything to do with the cut through the belly, but that size cape and quarter-length sleeves do not play well together. It’s awkward at best. Add in the tea-length hem on a dress that otherwise demands the balance of sweep all the way to the floor. Oh, and too-stfff fabric that moves badly! It looked like a first draft that needed MUCH more work.

The Dior, though...nearly perfection. I would have preferred more of a color, but the fit and proportions were lovely and hit just the right note of letting a pregnant woman look elegant.

Wow incredible clothing for this tour! Well I can imagine the time that she has to dedicate with her staff what she will use! She looked lovely in all the tour

I enjoyed all of her choices for this trip except the black pleated skirt. The Dior was really a dream, yes a pastel would have been prettier. I like the blue CH dress, it was too long and the print too large for her small boned frame, but didn't think it was a disaster as most seem to think.
Her black sling backs with the pleated skirt were such a better heel height for her. The super tall stilettos with the Dior looked simply dangerous. Her hair has been very good throughout.

I love the red dress. Absolutely beautiful and I love the details. Wonderful dress.

I like the look. Beautiful jacket.

I find this dress absolutely stunning. I love the color and style. One of her best look.

I don't like the jacket but I like the rest of the look.

We have a change of outfit for the second engagement:

I love the black/white look. Very beautiful dress.

I find this dress terrible. I find it too much. Beautiful color but I dislike it.

For a heavily pregnant woman’s body-frame I like the dress and actually think it suited her. It was also an appropriate attire and respectful to the host Nation and Monarch.

I'm among the people that like the blue dress too. I thought it was a good look for Meghan in respect of where she was and who she was meeting with. It was a tad bit too long and looked like a whole bunch of material floating around as she walked but it provided good aesthetics to me.

All in all, Meghan looked great during the entire tour and she enjoyed herself and so did the people she met.

Having watched several video reports on my big screen I find I have to eat my words. The CH dress was amazing and I think the weight of the gown pulled it that inch to long. However, she was not alone in that as the female attendant assigned to Meghan also had to use one hand to lift her thoub.

I am eating my words. She looked amazing.

I think some people are unfamiliar with how Moroccan caftans work. They are always long and should puddle on the ground. As I understand it the puddling fabric is to showcase wealth. If you look up photos of Lalla Salma and the King’s sisters you can see that they all have to lift their caftan when walking. This is how the design is meant to be, it’s not by mistake.
Some examples:

So my guess is that Meghan’s dress was made very long on purpose to mimic the Moroccan royal caftans.

Thank you Princess Larissa, that is a very enlightening explanation.

. . . and probably totally accurate.

Glad to see no black or navy, and a recycled coat. The colour palette is fine, white and creams, pale grey and with a touch of gold. I like what I can see of the dress under the coat. I hope the coat is going to be discarded at some time during the reception and we get a chance to see the dress and whether it has sleeves or not.

Everything is a repeat sans the dress - all British too.

I like this classic silhouette on her. I am not a fan of textured prints, though it isn't too bad here.

Also, this is one of those instances were mixing different textures can be tricky to colour code/match. Clutch and dress match nicely, whereas the suede shoe likely shows up much cooler in person, but isn't harmonising well in photographs.

That's generally something that I observe with some of Meghan's outfits - there seems to be quite a disconnect between how smth looks in person/video and how it photographs. Once she sets up a team, she'll likely come around appreciating camera blocking during outfit planing.

A different picture with better lighting conditions - like the ensemble much more in this:

Hate the shiny elements to the dress, but love the fact it's not black or navy or fitted and the repeat coat.

It's very elegant and would have been a wonderful choice for a cocktail hour event, but IMO a bit too dressy compared to what the other ladies are wearing. However at this point in her pregnancy, I wonder if she had another choice selected and then discovered that it no longer fit. ?

I'm never a fan of 'shiny, shiny'...
