Thai King’s Health ‘Unstable’, Palace Says In Rare Statement

King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand is in an “unstable” condition at the Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, the Thai Royal Palace said in a statement released late Sunday night.

He has received haemodialysis treatment, which purifies the blood in an individual who does not have proper kidney function; however the treatment caused his blood pressure to drop. Doctors placed the King on a ventilator and administered medication which returned his blood pressure to an appropriate level, though they are still closely monitoring his condition.

The statement on the health of King Bhumibol – who is the world’s longest reigning monarch – is atypical from the infrequent statements released on his health; usually statements are given once the King’s condition has improved.

BBC reports that the King’s doctors have also made a formal request to stop King Bhumibol from performing any official duties.

The last time the 88-year-old monarch was seen in public was back in January.
