On Friday November 16th, King Juan Carlos I hosted the heads of state from Portugal and many Latin American countries at the XXII Ibero-American Summit in the city of Cadiz.

The king began the day with a series of pre-summit meetings with the President of Colombia and the President of Ecuador; he later hosted a noon luncheon for the Mexican President, which was also attended by the Spanish Prime Minister.

Later that afternoon, the King accompanied by Queen Sofia and the Prince and Princess of Asturias presided over the opening ceremony of the XXII Summit of Heads of State and Government at the Gran Teatro Falla in Cadiz.

That evening, Juan Carlos hosted a dinner in honour of the summit at the Parador de Cadiz. It was here that the King announced that he was due to have hip surgery the following week.
