Denmark : Abdication & Accession Day - January 14, 2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Margrethe leaves with Benedikte.
I'm crying.

Frederik is very emotional.

That's it, it took 5 seconds. And a 52 year reign ended.

Margrethe looked both moved and frailed when she signed the abdication act.

I almost missed seeing the State Council footage. Sweet and humorous to see Queen Margrethe offering her son her seat at the table with a smile. (She is wearing the royal color of purple...)

Very odd IMO. No interaction between new King and former Queen. It looks like she declared something as she left - God save the King In Danish or something similar maybe?

The Queen was actually crying by the time she turned around, Christian was very aware (perhaps even shocked/moved) by it.

King Frederik and Queen Mary.

QMII has left Christiansborg.

Apparently Danish TV has shown some footage of Queen Margrethe leaving the Council of State and King Frederik X taking her seat with Crown Prince Christian seated next to him. I couldn't see if the actual signing of the declaration of abdication was also shown, as I just caught a glimpse of the footage.

The King bowed to Queen Margrethe as she stood up, which suggests he is still processing his new status. It appeared to me that Queen Margrethe gently (but somewhat impatiently) made a hand gesture to him to go on with it and take her seat, and then left the room.

EDIT: They have shown the clip again and, yes, it appears that Queen Margrethe was shown signing the abdication and delivering it to the prime minister. Could the Danish posters give a more detailed account of what was shown?

Are you sure that's Benedikte and not one of her ladies-in-waiting?

ETA: It is indeed her lady-in-waiting Annette de Scheel.

Took a quick water break and missed the signing moment—it happened so fast!

I found the lack of intimacy (a kiss or hug) very sad, perhaps nerves played a part in that. I’ve been so emotional, I can’t shake a sense of sadness.

I felt quite emotional when I heard the cheers from the crowd as Her Majesty left Christianborg.
Who is in the car with her? Is it a Lady in waiting?

It was not shown live but a bit later

Goodbye, Queen Daisy. Always a class act.
May she enjoy her well earned retirement.

I thought so too. She was certainly very emotional.

It looked like Christian’s jaw actually dropped for a moment when she said something and walked out.

Maybe they chose not to do that on camera. There is such a thing as wanting to keep some things private. Considering Frederik had tears in his eyes the whole time, there was nothing cold about any of it.

I have to keep reminding myself of this and the extra freedom she will have. People will still hold her in high esteem just she won’t have the ‘work’ to do. What a woman, what a life led.

"God save the King". I can't even begin to imagine how emotional those words must be for her – the last time she uttered them were for her father. No doubt that's exactly what she wanted to see.

That's my feeling too, like she was on the verge of tears and wanting very much not to cry in public..

Just before QMII went out the door, she said: "God save the King."

Oh wow!!

I guess everyone feels the Historic occasion of this moment, this day.

QMII is home. She can now put her feet up and watch her son being proclaimed King in half an hour.

The PM who is going to proclaim FX King is Mette Frederiksen, Social Democrat. She was initially a republican but is now openly a royalist, or perhaps rather a monarchist. Because she has seen and experienced that a monarchy actually can be useful and bring people together in way politicians may not.

It's a very solemn official moment.

Wanting some big physically emotional scene would be like wanting the same immediately after Charles was crowned. Not beseeming for the situationen.

Actually, I think the moment was very intimate. QMII motioning for her son to take her seat and proclaiming "God save the King". That's extremely intimate in my opinion.

Surprising, sad and touching to see Queen Margrethe tear up as she left the room at the close of the Council of State, but she has always been unafraid of being genuine and vulnerable in public.

About to appear on the balcony!!!
