As part of an introduction to the state visit to Sweden, royalblog repeated a piece from 2009 in which a story is included that Prince Bernhard (husband of king Carl Gustaf's godmother Queen Juliana) always was the first one to call on his birthday. He felt responsible for Carl Gustaf because his father died after he attended a hunt with prince Bernhard in the Netherlands in January 1947.

Then it must be one of the nicer stories about Bernhard, but it also seems like an excessive amount of guilt or responsibility simply for being one of the last people to see CG's father alive, doesn't it?

He was the host for this hunt. So, if he had not invited the Swedish crown prince, Gustaf Adolf wouldn't have flown to the Netherlands nor would he have needed to fly back. So, there wouldn't have been a crash in which he died.

Yes, but Edmund flew back through Copenhagen, not out of the Netherlands. If he'd gone home from Schiphol directly (or done a hundred other things) he might have lived. It's not like Bernhard drove him to the airport.

Unfortunately, with Bernhard's reputation adding to the slightly unclear circumstances of the crash, it honestly seems like Bernhard could have had some less-charitable reason for feeling so upset and guilty, especially considering he famously wasn't a man who let his conscience trouble him much.

The initial source says that Bernhard felt responsible for Carl Gustav, but says nothing about it being because he felt guilt for the accident.

On the occasion of the death of the actor Sven-Bertil Taube, HM the King has made the following statement.

Sven-Bertil Taube has passed away after a long cultural career.
With the passing of Sven-Bertil Taube, Sweden has lost a great and beloved cultural personality.
He had an unusual presence in his performances, which helped him reach and find a place in the hearts of many generations of Swedes.
My family and I send our condolences to Sven-Bertil Taube's relatives.

After spending a large part of his Christmas speech talking about the inhabitants of Gammalsvenskby in Ukraine and sending them his personal greetings, King Carl Gustav and his family has donated a "large sum of money" to the village to rebuild the road leading to the village and also a community center where people will have access to water, heating, communications, electricity and food. Plans are to start building as soon as possible, with the largest obstacle being the continued Russian bombardments. The road was inaugurated by the King during his and the Queen's visit in 2008 and carries his name.

Gammalsvenskby was founded in 1783 by Swedish settlers from the island of Hiiumaa in modern day Estonia. Their descendants kept their Lutheran religion and Swedish language until the majority of them left for Sweden in 1929. Some later returned to join those who had stayed on in Ukraine and their descendants still live in the village, now part of the town of Zmijivka, although only some still speak the Swedish language. The town was under Russian occupation from March to November 2022.

Svensk Damtidning writes about the King and Queen's interview in Antik & Auktion, an Aller magazine just like Svensk Damtidning.
At the interview the royal couple shows some of their otherwise closed rooms, such as the slightly secret octagonal cabinet, and they discuss about art, architecture and their coolest museum experience. Reporter Lars Vikström gets into John-Erik Franzén's official giant portrait of the royal family, a parade painting that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery at Gripsholm Castle, and which was already in the news in its time.
The king reveals what the queen really thinks:
- Yes, you don't like it. But I think it's fun.
The Queen counters diplomatically:
- The portrait was very special.
- Yes, that was the whole point, replies the king.
But the queen does not give up:
- I didn't like when he painted the crown princess with her arm at her side. It didn't suit for her as a person, I think, because it was a bit von oben. And it's not her!
The king tells that unfortunately they buy art very little. He regrets every day that he didn't start it when he was younger, but it never happened. Maybe he didn't dare and thought everything was so expensive. But the king has his special private collection area, he thinks modern Swedish silver is wonderful.

King Carl Gustaf should have attended with queen Silvia this evening at the Jewish congregation's memorial service for the Victims of the Holocaust at the Great Synagogue in Stockholm.

The court took the King's name out of the calendar this afternoon and tells Svensk Damtidning that the King has a slight cold and because of that, out of consideration for the participants at the memorial service, has chosen not to be present this evening at the Great Synagogue. Queen Silvia attends alone.

Looking at the picture, Victoria does look a bit like Henry VIII in the making. I think I see Silvia's point. I can see how the king finds it fun, but maybe it's the sort of fun the whole country doesn't need to see.

The King and Queen have sent congratulatory telegrams to Ebba Årsjö and Zebastian Modin, who won gold medals in this week's World Championships in winter parasport. Big congratulations on the wins!

The royal court has told to Svensk Damtidning that the king is still ill with cold symptoms, and he will not be able to be back on duty on Tuesday, as planned.
- The king is still not fully recovered and will therefore not participate in the diplomatic reception tomorrow.
However, he is on the road to recovery and the hope is that he will be back at work later this week, he plans to carry out his planned program items on Wednesday.
Queen Silvia attends the diplomatic reception in Princess Sibylla's apartments tomorrow with Victoria and Daniel.

So, who is the host in that case: Queen Silvia or Crown Princess Victoria?

The book "Swedish innovations that changed the world" is made in collaboration with the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and is available in both Swedish and English. The foreword in the book is written by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf who is IVA's patron, and personally has a great interest in inventions and innovations.

Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria held today a diplomatic reception for ambassadors from Tunisia, Pakistan, Argentina, India, the Dominican Republic and Kazakhstan.

It was announced already yesterday that the King still has cold and can't attend the diplomatic reception. Today also Daniel became ill, he has a cold, Margareta Thorgren told to Svensk Damtidning.

It seems they were co-hostesses, with the Queen's name listed first. (Very different from the treatment the crown princess's consort receives when he attends an engagement in her absence.)

I don't see the text as indicative of who was the host, but of who in the Royal family were present.
The previous reception was reported as follows:
"Diplomatic reception at the Royal Palace. On 20 September, the Royal Couple and the Crown Princess Couple held a diplomatic reception for the ambassadors from Ireland, Indonesia, Switzerland and Ukraine."

Press release from the royal court

On the advice of HM the King's personal physician, HM the King will perform a surgical procedure on Monday, February 20, 2023. It will be performed through a so-called keyhole technique in the heart area.
After the procedure, a period of calmness is recommended. This means that the King's planned commitments between February 20 and March 3 are moved to later this spring.
The king is doing well and his official program until the day of the operation is being carried out according to plan.

- The king is doing well, this is a planned intervention in the heart area, says the royal family's physician Viveka Frykman Kull.
She does not want to comment further on the procedure.
- I cannot say much more about the procedure at the moment because the royal family has the same secrecy as everyone else.

Margareta Thorgren says to Svensk Damtidning that the King will go to the county visit to Jönköping on Thursday.
Does this mean Crown Princess Victoria is taking over as temporary Regent?
- No - there is no need for that due to the nature of the operation, says Thorgren.

Svensk Damtidning called Tord Magnuson, who attended with the King, Carl Philip and princess Christina at the inauguration of Stockholm as European Capital of Gastronomy 2023 yesterday evening.

So how was dinner? And was anything noticed on the king last night?
- It was very fun and well-directed and excitingly organized. And the king was fine, says Tord.
There are many who feel with the king now before this operation on Monday. And you and your wife spent the evening with him. Should we be worried?
- Oh no. It is not a significant operation. I don't have any details, but there is no danger. This will be fine, says Tord reassuringly.
Was it a late night?
- What is meant by late? It depends on what you mean by late! But we were probably home around 11 p.m.
So you're feeling calm, you and the princess?
- Yes absolutely.

Svensk Damtidning had put a photographer to the Royal Palace courtyard.
How is the king? And where is he?
That is the question after the event that took place at the Royal Palace at lunchtime today:
The king's private BMW - which he basically never lets anyone else drive - rolled out of Inner Courtyard and was captured in a picture by Svensk Damtidning's photographer.
And it wasn't the king himself who was at the wheel.
Instead, it was an unknown man with a beard – perhaps a bodyguard – who was driving.

Wishing the king good thoughts for his operation and recuperation for his surgical procedure.

Heartrelated surgery is never to be taken lightly but a recuperation period of 2 weeks suggests that they don't expect a major set back (as that would require months not weeks). Hope all goes according to plan.

It seems the surgery is scheduled for a day when Victoria will have returned from Down Under - which makes sense (both from a personal as well as state-perspective).

Wishing nothing but the best for the Dancing King. I expect him to rule a few more years, and then enjoy a nice retirement for many more.

How strange that he and his cousin should be having surgery almost simultaneously.

From the announcements it seems like the King's procedure is far more minor and he is meant to resume his usual schedule much more quickly. Hopefully it goes according to plan.
