Hurra! The first State Visit of the year so far!!!

The state visit will happen between 19-22 March

:previous:

The state visit will not take place as planned, but will be postponed, it was announced today:

State visit to Vietnam postponed (..) The Vietnamese authorities have requested that the state visit of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty Queen Máxima to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam be postponed due to domestic circumstances. The state visit that was scheduled for March 19 to 22 will not take place.

Domestic circumstances in Vietnam, says the NOS. Though it is unclear what these are.

Does anyone know what the 'domestic circumstances' in Vietnam are that make a postponement necessary?

It seems the prime minister is currently on a combined Australia - New Zealand trip...

Yes I was wondering the same and it happening almost at the 11th hour!

According to the Southeast Asia correspondent for the NOS, Mustafa Marghadi, the most likely reason is a (further) decline in the Communist Party's secretary general's health as there is no social unrest or anything like that. The secretary general (the party leader) has been unwell for several months and because of that wasn't able to meet with Indonesian president during his visit in January and spent some time in hospital as well.

During the NL doet activity on Friday the king made clear that he has no clue why the state visit was postponed. The conversation went as follows:

Journalist: "The state visit to Vietnam is postponed. What was your reaction when you heard that?"
King: "Firstly, it is a pity that it is postponed. (...) We will need to hear what the reason is. We truly do not know."
Journalist: "You truly do not know?"
King: "No, we truly do not know"

He was in Canberra and New Zealand a week ago. There has been no news on any domestic issues in Vietnam; it would be headline news if there was since Australia has a massive Vietnamese community

There were reports that the Vietnamese PM was ill in January, but again, not really covered in the news.

EDIT: Extraordinary session has been called for this Thursday in the Vietnamese Parliament. Looks like the current PM may be resigning

Vietnam’s parliament is set to meet on Thursday to discuss unspecified “personnel issues”, according to a letter sent to legislators seen by Reuters, amid speculation of a reshuffle of the Communist-ruled country’s top leadership.
