Swedish State Visit to Mexico: March 12-14, 2024

Their Majesties The King and Queen will pay a State Visit to Mexico on 12–14 March 2024 at the invitation of His Excellency President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The first day of the State Visit will begin with a wreath-laying and official welcome ceremony, at which Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his wife Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller will welcome The King and Queen to the National Palace. This will be followed by a bilateral meeting with the President and his wife. The King and Queen will also visit the Mexican Senate. The day will conclude with a dinner hosted by The King and Queen.
Business issues and children’s rights will be the focus of the second day. In the morning, The King will open the Mexico-Sweden Business Forum, where discussion topics will include sustainable transport solutions, sustainable mining, the telecommunications industry and health. The King and Queen will then visit SOS Children’s Villages and the large public National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). After a lunch with business sector representatives, The King will inaugurate Ericsson’s new offices in Mexico City. The King and Queen will then meet with Swedes residing in the country. The day will conclude with a performance of traditional Mexican dances at the Palace of Fine Arts.
The third day will continue in the city of Mérida. The King and Queen will travel on the recently launched Tren Maya train to the pre-Columbian ruined city of Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where they will meet representatives of the Maya and Yaqui indigenous peoples. Later in the day, the King and Queen will meet with the Governor of Yucatán.
The State Visit will conclude the following day, when the King and Queen leave Mexico.

Tuesday March 12
Wreath laying ceremony
The King and Queen participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Obelisco a los Niños Heroes, where Minister Johan Forssell is also present.

Official welcome ceremony and bilateral meeting
Afterwards, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his wife Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller will receive the King and Queen at the National Palace for an official welcome ceremony. It is followed by a bilateral meeting in which the King and Queen and Minister Johan Forssell participate.

Visit to the Senate
In the afternoon, the royal couple will visit the Mexican Senate together with Minister Johan Forssell. After a welcome by Senate President Ana Lilia Rivera, an official ceremony follows in the Senate courtyard and talks with Mexican parliamentarians.

Banquet
In the evening, the King and Queen host a banquet.

Wednesday March 13
Mexico-Sweden Business Forum
The forum is organized by Business Sweden and more than 300 participants from business, government and academia are invited. During the Business Forum, among other things, sustainable transport solutions, sustainable mining, the telecom industry and innovation in the health area will be discussed. The royal couple and the minister are welcomed on arrival by Mexico's trade minister, Raquel Buenrostro, and Business Sweden's managing director, Jan Larsson. The King gives a speech when the forum opens.

SOS Children's Villages
The royal couple will visit SOS Children's Villages, where a demonstration of the activities will take place.

National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)
The royal couple visit the major state university, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). It has over 350,000 students and is ranked in the top hundred list of the world's top universities. After a presentation of the activities and the signing of a cooperation agreement between the physics departments at UNAM and the University of Gothenburg, the Royal Couple will meet a small group of Mexican students studying Swedish.

Lunch with business representatives
The royal couple and Minister Johan Forssell participate in a lunch with representatives of Swedish and Mexican business life.

Ericsson Mexico City
In the afternoon, Sweden's role in the Mexican telecom market will be highlighted. It takes place at a meeting at Ericsson's newly built office in Mexico City. After an introductory presentation by Secretary of State Rogelio Jiménez Pons Gómez, Mexico's Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, Minister Johan Forssell gives a speech. The King then inaugurates the new office, after which a tour with the royal couple and the prime minister takes place.

Meeting with the Swedish colony
The royal couple and Minister Johan Forssell meet members of the Swedish colony at a meeting at the Swedish residence, hosted by Ambassador Gunnar Aldén. The King and the Minister will also each give a speech.

Palacio de Bellas Artes
In the evening, the royal couple and the Minister watch a performance at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, where traditional Mexican dances will be shown.

Thursday March 14
The third day of the state visit takes place in Mérida in the state of Yucatán.
Mérida
The royal couple and Minister Forssell arrive in Mérida where they are welcomed by Yucatán Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal with wife Maria Eugenia Ortiz Abraham.

Hacienda Temozón
At a meeting at Hacienda Temozón, the King and Queen and the Minister meet Minister of Culture Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, who is accompanying the program during the day. The governor of Yucatán will also speak about strategic investment projects that have been implemented in the region.

Uxmal
In the afternoon, the Royal Couple and the Minister visit the pre-Columbian ruined city of Uxmal, one of Mexico's largest and most famous ruined cities from the Mayan culture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit begins with a welcome ceremony with music and dance from the indigenous Maya and Yaqui peoples. A guided tour concludes the visit to Uxmal.

Hacienda San Antonio School
In the evening, a meeting is held with representatives of the state government and representatives from the local and Swedish business community at Hacienda San Antonio Hool.

The state visit ends the following day, when the King and Queen leave Mexico.

Why are the King and Queen hosting a Banquet and not the mexican President as Host of the State Visit?

That's indeed weird. Why is the host not organizing a banquet in their honor on the first night? I guess the dance performance is hosted by Mexico, although it is unclear who will show up from the side of Mexico.

Based on this program there will be an official welcome by the President but anything else seems unclear in terms of the participation of Mexico's head of state. No goodbye ceremony is included either; they just 'leave' the next day according to this program.

Obviously the King and Queen have been invited to a state visit. This visit seems very similar to the state visit the President of Finland made to Mexico in 2015, also then there was only an official welcome ceremony and a lunch with the President of Mexico.

Today, on the last day, the king and queen travel to Mérida to, among other things, visit the ruined city of Uxmal.
They should have arrived by train with "El Tren Maya", which many critics call the "train of death". A demonstration against this was planned to take place outside the Swedish embassy in Mexico City today.
The court removed the train journey from the program.
Both local residents and international organizations are worried about Tren Maya's environmental impact. After initially promising not to cut down a single tree, the government later announced that 3.4 million trees had been felled to clear the way for the railway and environmentalists claim that the actual number is significantly higher.

Obviously the King and Queen have been invited to a state visit. This visit seems very similar to the state visit the President of Finland made to Mexico in 2015, also then there was only an official welcome ceremony and a lunch with the President of Mexico.

Boel Lindbergh, Head of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs' International Press Centre, says that the presidential couple doesn't participate in dinners.

Of course they had to be technically invited but presumably these visits come about as the result of the respective foreign affairs staff having discussions.

If Sweden really wanted the visit to happen for business reasons they may have pushed for it and wanted the royal couple to participate. I recall Carl Gustaf going fishing in Mexico a few years ago, so maybe he has an affinity for Mexico and wanted to be involved.

It seems like there was ample precedence for how the Mexican president does things and still the choice was made for this to be a state visit and yet not have all the pomp that usually entails rather than an official visit.
