The interest in things Czech stretches from the man in the street to Japan’s heir apparent, crown prince Naruhito who visited Czechoslovakia in 1985, shortly before the fall of communism. Himself a violin player, he is familiar with the works of Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček and during his meeting with the Czech prime minister recalled having played with the Talich Quartet in Prague and gone to a hockey match. Prime Minister Sobotka said the prince showed a keen interest in how the country had changed since his visit.
"The future Japanese emperor is someone who knows a great deal about the Czech Republic and who is particularly appreciative of the contribution Czechs have made to world culture."

PACIFICO Yokohama
Dr Asamura and Dr Park, Co-Presidents of the 18th World Conference on Lung Cancer,
Excellencies,
Distinguished guests and participants,
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is a great pleasure for me, together with all of you present here today, to witness the Opening Ceremony of the 18th World Conference on Lung Cancer organised by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
I understand that this conference aims at amassing a broad range of wisdom and knowledge derived from the domains of basic medical science, public health and clinical medicine to tackle the intractable global disease, namely lung cancer, and thus to improve the level of lung cancer treatment in the hope of saving as many patients as possible. I am very delighted to hear that new developments in recent years, particularly in the domains of molecular biology and immunology, have led to improvements in clinical treatment results, which have benefitted many patients.
I believe that the fact that so many researchers from around the globe have gathered together in this conference to present their latest achievements and share them among themselves, will greatly encourage many patients who are undergoing treatment for lung cancer as well as their family members. It is also encouraging that there will be a lot of extensive patient support programs and advocacy programs to be held during this conference.
The theme of this conference is "Synergy to Conquer Lung Cancer." I firmly believe that, as this theme indicates, your friendly rivalry, surpassing national borders and regional boundaries, as well as traversing domains of specialty and professions, will indeed act as the driving force to stimulate new advancement in thoracic medical treatment.
In closing, I would like to express my best wishes for the success of all of you in your respective future endeavors.
Thank you.

I must say that I was honored and privileged to have the opportunity to meet the Crown Prince of Japan. It was a very impressive experience for the delegation coming from different parts of the globe to have this rare opportunity. The Crown Prince had a vast knowledge about the countries we were from and we shared our ideas and emotions not only about the Japan but also our motherlands. He knew about Sri Lankan landmarks like the Temple of the Sacred Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The wisdom, maturity and friendship was remarkable and we were so happy and lucky to have this experience with the Crown Prince in Japan.

Participation in a knowledge co-creation program funded by JICA provided me the chance to attend an audience with His Highness the Crown Prince of Japan. I was impressed by his noble personality and kindness.
Japan is a land of ethics and being well-mannered. The people are so friendly and respectful regardless of their social status. The hospitality of the Crown Prince is a great sign of the rich culture of extraordinary Japan.
Arigato gozaimasu, Crown Prince.
