If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It was a lovely church service from start to finish… Followed on my Ipad here in Stockholm ?

The danish church services reminds a lot of the swedish so it almost felt like home… Nice to see all the bishops in procession… I thought i heard the commentators mention that 5 of the bishop copes is designed by QMII so i’m sure she loved to see them all

The danish hymns and choral music are lovely and easy to sing a long with even for a neighbour ?

Nice to see Krone 1 and Krone 2 being brought over to Aarhus to transport the royal couple and their children ! I was afraid the modern audi’s would be used

It was indeed a lovely Service and good to see all the family in attendance. Beautiful touch for Queen Mary with a choral rendition of Eternal Father.

You got that right :flowers:QMII designed the bishop’s capes belonging to
the dioceses of Helsingør, Haderslev, Aarhus, Viborg and Aalborg!

All the bishops are present, because it’s a service embracing the Danish
Commonwealth. The Danish Roman-catholic bishop was there as were representatives from the Methodist church, the Jewish and the Muslim
communities!
The Church of Denmark is rather good at “ pulling out the stops” at
special occasions! The bishops in their robes, five of which were designed
and ( partially) made by Queen Margrethe. Danish bishop are not wearing
mitras!

In germany protestant Bishops are also not wearing mitras. But they also don't have such colourfull robes, But often they and also normal Priestsab have a special shale/stole.

Can anyone summarize the sermon? What were the Bible(?) readings used?

The lessons belonging to this particular Sunday:

Isaiah 2, 2-5 and Collosians 1,25d- 28 and the gospel: John 12,23-33.
I don’t remember whether Isaiah was read, however Collosians definetely
was.
As for the sermon, I don’t have it in print right now, but a short
summary, according to my memory: the bishop began his sermon by reminding us
what’s it’s like to begin at a new work place; being a bit intimidated because
of the expectations, getting to know the ropes, the initial kindness
and welcoming attitude of the colleagues, which can turn into criticism later on.

Later, the bishop continued to talk about having a vocation and what
it entails. Having a vocation is not necessarily a burden, there’s also
a freedom in knowing what is expected of you. From there, he addressed
King Frederik directly, talking about his vocation and his commitment
and obligations to the people - and vice versa, elaborating the motto
of the King.
The interesting thing was, that the bishop adressed KF by using the informal
“Du” and not the more formal and oldfashioned “De”. In this situation the
bishop is superior to none and second to none, and I’m almost certain
that the King was informed and had agreed to this form of address
in the planning phase!

Correction: the first reading was indeed the text from Isaiah.
I noticed that Apostolicum - the Apostles’ creed- was spoken and not
sung, as it normally is in our cathedrals.

The security presence was quite heavy this time.
Did we notice everyone's favorite PET officer, from last Sunday? Or did we find someone else to delight our eyes? ?

Christian seems very poised and far more comfortable in his role than Frederik did at his age.

I'm always happy to see Count Ingolf and Countess Susie.

No comment on certain people outside the church.

Aarhus Cathedral was build in the 1500s and you can tell. It's a very solid, no nonsense church. Without too much unnecessary decorations. In line with the more stern Lutheran interpretation of Christianity.

The current church(an earlier one had been destroyed) was finished in 1500 as a Catholic cathedral not a Lutheran church.

With the Aarhus Cathedral service, I don't see Queen Margrethe taking a back seat. It's as if Denmark now has three monarchs: Frederik, Mary and Margrethe.

You are right.
I stand so corrected.

The interior of the church was made much more austere after the Reformation though.

In recent years some of the colorful late-medieval wall paintings that had been covered by chalk for centuries have been uncovered.
So originally the cathedrals interior was much more colorful, decorated and vibrant.

The cathedral is in stark contrast to the Catholic church of Our Lady that is located only a few hundred meters away.
While the cathedral is massive and masculine, the Church of our Lady is more feminine and delicate and much more decorated.

First the cathedral:

Then the Church of Our Lady. It used to be a church for the Dominican order.
It's pretty old, from the late Viking Age.

The DRF passed the remaining Catholic church on their way to and from the cathedral.

How lovely that they also included a picture of count Ingolf and countess Susie in their Instagram pictures.

I noticed security even while entering the church both for queen Margrethe as well as for the king and queen. No visible security for Benedikte when she entered.

With the Aarhus Cathedral service, I don't see Queen Margrethe taking a back seat. It's as if Denmark now has three monarchs: Frederik, Mary and Margrethe.

Denmark only has one monarch and that is Frederik. Mary is not a monarch, she is the monarch's consort, and Margrethe is the former monarch and she is going to have to take a back seat, or else there could be problems.

I agree with Iain, there is only one monarch. I think Margarethe has appeared at the key celebratory events around the accession of Frederik, but will now substantially reduce her appearance at key events. It is now time for Frederik, ably assisted by Mary, to be front and centre.

Aarhus Cathedral was a beautiful setting for the Service and thankfully has retained a lot of its medieval decoration and furnishings that were lost in a lot of other churches during the Reformation.

The Monarch is the Head of State and there is only 1 such. Frederik.

I don’t think any dane would blame QMII for taking part in the high profile events surrounding the accession… They are as much a way to thank her for her 52 years on the throne, as for welcoming King Frederik.

There will undoubtly take place many meetings between the 2 courts over the coming period, where the difficult questions such as who should do what, who should keep what, which annual events QMII will continue to attend, how much and in what ways the Court of QMII is going to downsize to mark the distinction to King Frederiks court etc will have to be adressed…

For now everything has been connected to the abdication/accession…. But i don’t think anyone expects QMII to completely dissapear from public view unless she becomes gravely ill…

My guess is that Queen Margrethe will attend certain Events and perhaps also Events where she will be alone. Probably a bit like her m other did as Queenmother. Will be interesting if she will continue to attend State Banquets and the New Years Banquet. As far as i remember Queen Ingrid did so as long as her health allowed it

Going out of the Cathedral King Frederik was with the Prime Minister I suppose , Queen Mary with ??
Then a stop and Queen Margrethe ..
A lot of bows and less cutseys.
Seing people in the snow , they like their new King.
.

Margrethe was seated after the new Crown Prince Christian.

clearly there is one monarch with his consort, then the crown prince, then the rest

a nice gallery from yesterday's church service

and from New Idea Australia, has some nice solo shots

I love that Frederik took off one of his gloves so he and Mary could hold hands.

You nailed it.

This was a part of the official hand-over so to speak, and I believe people would have been disappointed if QMII had not attended this celebratory service. For Denmark outside Copenhagen (we do not use the word "province" outside Copenhagen.) this was just as much an official celebration of the new Regent Couple as an appreciation of QMII. You probably noticed the cheers, the applause and the hurrahs when QMII emerged.

QMII will still be applauded for some time yet when she is out and about be it official or private. As she deserves IMO.

Aarhus Cathedral was a beautiful setting for the Service and thankfully has retained a lot of its medieval decoration and furnishings that were lost in a lot of other churches during the Reformation.

IMO the Cathedral of Aarhus is a beautiful, serene building! Contrary to
the RC church and the Greek/Russian orthodox churches, the churches of the
Reformation don’t worship saints. The reformers thought that medieval
murals featurings saints would “ distract” the congregation from the spoken
word, which is why they were painted over. Many of these murals have
since been restored! Another thing: Many of our medieval granite baptismal
fonts were painted in bright colours, and I for one would like see them
restored to their former paint schemes. Unfortunately you cannot change
anything in the medieval churches without the approval of the experts at
the National Museum! They are inclined to view churches as museums rather than “ assembly rooms” for the congregation!

Catholics and Orthodox Christians do not worship saints! And Aarhus is still dedicated to St. Clement.

Maybe not, but they pray to them!. “Worship” was the best English word I
could come up with in this context! To a Dane it’s an English word that
- in the broadest sense - covers the religious practices of other confessions!
Many Danish medieval churches have kept their names from the RC era, but that’s only for historical reasons!
And though Lutherans don’t pray to saints, we respect them like we
respect Christians, who worship/celebrate/pray in other ways that we do!
