His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco undertook his second polar trip in three years on January 5, 2009. The 20 day trip to Antarctica follows a 2006 trip to the North Pole and included visits to 26 different scientific outposts and meetings with scientists from 18 countries studying climate change.

The busy Sovereign’s own environmental foundation and the Monaco government websites updated his His Serene Highness’ progress in realtime and made the entire trip electronically available via the internet. Users tracked the Prince’s trip via Google Earth, viewed photos and videos. To highlight the need to educate children on the issue, Prince Albert participated in a live telephone link from Antarctica with students from his Monaco alma mater, Albert I High School.

The Prince will not be the only high profile Royal to visit the cold continent this year to highlight the growing importance of global warming. Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Orange and Maxima are scheduled to visit in February.

Photos and videos of Prince Albert II’s visit are available here.
