Vamos Garbi! King Juan Carlos Watches As Spaniard Is Crowned Wimbledon Champion
King Juan Carlos I of Spain was seated in the Royal Box of Centre Court at Wimbledon on Saturday, to watched his compatriot Garbiñe Muguruza claim the women’s singles title.
Following Muguruza’s 7-5, 6-0 defeat of American Venus Williams, the King met up with the new champion inside the clubrooms to offer personal congratulations. The Duke of Kent, as President of the All England Club, had presented the trophies to both players.
Muguruza’s win saw her make history as the first player to defeat both Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) in a grand slam final. She is also only the second Spanish women to win the Wimbledon crown; her coach, Conchita Martinez, was champion in 1994.
