King Abdullah and Queen Rania Celebrate 20th Wedding Anniversary
The King and Queen of Jordan celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary today.
The oldest son of the late King Hussein, Prince Abdullah, met Rania Yassin in August 1992 at a dinner held at the home of his sister, Princess Aisha. Six months later, on February 22, 1993 Prince Abdullah and Rania announced their engagement. Both families celebrated the Al Fatiha (engagement ceremony) at Rania’s parent’s house, and during the ceremony Abdullah gave to Rania a diamond ring.
The wedding took place on June 10, 1993 at Zahran Palace, the residence of the Queen Zein Al Sharaf. The wedding was attended by 2000 guests, among were members of other royal houses such as Queen Sofia of Spain, Crown Prince Mohammed of Morocco, Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum of Dubai and Sheikh Meshal Al Thani of Qatar.
Rania wore two different dresses on this day: one for the wedding ceremony and another for the party. Both dresses were designed by the British designer Bruce Oldfield.
After King Hussein’s death in 1999, Prince Abdullah was appointed King of Jordan. King Abdullah and Queen Rania have four children: Prince Hussein (born in June 1994), Princess Iman (born in September 1996), Princess Salma (born in September 2000) and Prince Hashem (born in January 2005).
