January 12, 2013 – The Vatican

The Prince and Princess of Monaco met with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday January 12th at the Vatican.

Though Prince Albert has met with the Holy Father in the past, this was the first meeting and audience for Princess Charlène. The visit was said to have been of special importance to the Princely Couple, and the Pontiff congratulated Princess Charléne on her sporting prowess. The audience has also sparked rumours on whether Princess Charléne was granted the Privilége du blanc, as she wore a white dress and mantilla. The Privilège du blanc is currently held only by the Catholic Queens of Spain and Belgium and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, who are permitted to wear white when meeting the Pope.

Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace were received at the Vatican by Pope Pius XII in 1957, by Pope John XXIII in 1959 and by Pope Paul VI in 1974; they later paid visits to Popes John Paul I and John Paul II.
