That’s my hope too Would be interested to know if there is a precedent for this within the Royal Family.

There is no precedent for abdication in the Danish royal family. To my best knowledge queen Margrethe has no health problems. I met the queen once a very interesting and knowledgeable person, and my best guess is that the tiring parts of being queen (travelling, meeting polititians, listening to boring speeches, meeting boring people, very limited personal time) simply started to outweigh the enjoyable parts.

I didn't have this on my Bingo card for New Year predictions! I'm completely shocked, but the timing is right for Frederik and Mary.

Wow! I can't believe it. At the same time, I can see how one can say they'd never do something when they're still doing their part without too much obstacles. But when aging and health issues become an obstacle? Intentions may change.

She's a lady of quick action, for sure. Two weeks? Talk about taking things in stride.

Maybe a Danish speaker can offer some insight but I am curious about the Royal Court's use of tronskifte (change of throne) compared to abdikation (abdication).

I didn't see this coming...I thought she would hang on to the end. But for many months HM's physical discomfort has become pretty obvious. I have always admired her courage and dignity. Even more so now that she has decided to pass the reigns to her Heir instead of imposing herself as a diminished and frail monarch on Denmark for what could be many years to come.

Well done, Queen Margrethe.:previous::crown3::daneflag2:

Christian now joins Elisabeth, Amalia and Leonor as an actual heir, no longer the heir's heir. It's going to be so different for him at the military academy now, arriving as CROWN PRINCE Christian.

I wish Christian could have gone through military service and university without that burden. He is still young and looks immature. But it was not meant to be. I guess.

Anyway, if Leonor and Elisabeth can/could handle it, I am sure Christian will be able to do it too.

I wonder if she'll retain the title of queen. Her mother did, but she was a consort. Perhaps she'll revert to princess, as Beatrix did in the Netherlands.

And, it will be interesting to see what she does next. Will she continue to have a public role? Maybe she'll become a full-time artist and writer.

The word "Tronskifte" is more exact. = That someone else sits on the throne.
Abdications = the monarch resigns - but that does not necessarily mean there will be a new monarch.

The queen always ends her addresses with "GOD SAVE DENMARK" , which is her motto. She has never before ended with "GOD BLESS YOU ALL". A touching farewell.

As the DRF write on the English version of their website, "tronskifte" translates to "succession of the throne". "Abdikation" would just refer to QMII abdicating. "Tronskifte" encapsulates QMII's abdication and Frederik's ascension. Literally the change from one regent to another.

What are your suggestions for the change of throne? Do you think that there will be some official engagements? With or without foreign royals?

Tronskifte (change of throne) is what takes place when the Queen abdicates and leaves the throne to the Crown Prince: it changes from the Queen to the new King. Abdikation (abdication) is applied as the name of the specific act/process, by which the Queen vacates the throne.

Some questions:
Are Frederik and Mary going to have a proclamation ceremony?
Will Margrethe have the title of Queen Emeritus?
What other changes could happen?

I was shocked when I heard. But then… her back surgery aside, I think it really has been thinking about what is best for Denmark that has been making her decision. And, occasions of state and public relations for Denmark where she cannot participate as much, will probably have influenced her. Plus other things behind the scenes.

In addition, I think it has partly been about making sure Christian is of age, and Frederik is not in the same situation that she was when she became queen: with very young children. But also that he isn’t a pensioner himself before he gets the chance.

She must also have observed the colleagues abroad, and their choices.

We live in interesting times.

The Swedish Royal House knew that Margrethe was going to abdicate before it became known.
"The entire Royal Family has received the information that H.M. Queen Margrethe will abdicate. H.M. Queen Margrethe has personally spoken to and informed H.M. The King about her abdication decision", writes Margareta Thorgren, the director of the court's Information department, to Aftonbladet.

Absolutely.

M&F will be doing quite a few outgoing state visits. A kind of presentation round.
And most likely to the most "friendly territories" first so to speak. To get some practice and knowing full well that any mistakes will cause no problems.
Keep in mind that some of M&F's current staff will now get heavier jobs, so they need to gain some experience as well.

So the first two visits will almost certainly go to Norway and Sweden, with the Netherlands high on the list as well. And after a routine has been established there will no doubt be a visit to Australia as well.

True. In 2020, given the circumstances with COVID-19, she concluded her speech "God bless you all. God save Denmark".

In her final speech, she reversed the two.

Like everyone else, I am absolutely shocked but I am sure this this the right decision for the Queen and Denmark. She is a strategic thinker and a great Queen!

Will there be a Coronation for Crown Prince Frederick? Also, since she has abdicated, is he immediately called King Frederick? I am not sure how things work in the Danish Monarchy. I follow the British Monarchy mostly, but I have become interested in other monarchies since I have been a member of the Royal Forums.

She has not abdicated. She has announced that she intends to abdicate on 14 January 2024.

Oh my God, what a shocking news

There are no coronations anymore in Denmark since the 1840's most likely he will be proclaimed King from the Balcony of Christiansborg like his mother and his grandfather

This also means a "retirement" for Princess Benedikte, and no public engagements for Count Ingolf?

I wonder if beloved Queen Daisy will move to Gråsten or Fredensborg?
I'm so sad. Happy for Mary, she will be a great Queen. But Margrethe is MY Queen.

I guess there will be a gala dinner and Mary's first tiara as Queen will be the Pearl Poire? I'm just realising that, if the Ruby Parure is reserved for the Crown Princess, tomorrow will be the last time we could see it on Mary, and the last time we see it until Christian gets married!!!?

Wow some news!
It seems she took her back surgery as a time to reflect. Over the years the state visits and outgoing visits had fallen on Frederik and Mary. I think she took a right decision, if she doesnt feel 100% then it's her choice.

The recent polls reflect favorably on Frederik and having followed his work the past decades he is more then ready.

77% of Danes are confident in Frederik.
I think the transition will be smooth.
Christian as Crown Prince will find his footing. I'm sure he will be given time to finish his studies and any military preparations.

I don't think that is correct. Ingrid used it as Queen, and bequeathed the parure to Frederick for his wife to use. I do not believe it has been reserved for the use by a Crown Princess only.

That said, I can't see Mary use the rubies in a hurry after she becomes Queen. She will have a few other choices.

I guess Mary will continue to use the ruby Parure like Queen Ingrid did. Perhaps she will hand it over to the new Crown Princess once Christian marries

Ahhh right. Thank God, I was hyperventilating.

I would think that she would be referred to as Queen Margrethe and Mary would be Her Majesty the Queen.
Hoping the Queen and her sisters can get some much needed rest and quiet time together since they are all widows.
