On December 16th, IHA announced CP Naruhito will be honorary president of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Denmark diplomatic relations next year. Various memorial events will be planned in both countries; the "Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between Japan and Denmark" was concluded in 1867. CP Frederik is the honorary president on the Danish side.

I wonder if CP Naruhito will visit Denmark since the Danish CP couple already visited in 2015.

IHA will send CP Naruhito to open the 8th Asian Winter Games in Hokkaido Prefecture on February 19th on behalf of the Emperor. A 3-day visit, February 18-20, is being planned. CP Masako's attendance at either the opening or closing ceremony (Feb. 26) will be determined later.

Originally, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were to attend the opening ceremony as requested by the Games organizers, but the IHA reconsidered sending the elderly couple during the coldest season. Previously, CP Naruhito opened the 5th Asian Winter Games on behalf of the Emperor in 2003 when His Majesty was being treated for prostate cancer.

Another health consideration for the change is the Vietnam trip for Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko is also scheduled for February.

CP Naruhito attended the 5th "Japanese Medical Association Red Beard Award" and reception on February 10th. The award honors physicians dedicated to community medical services and is sponsored by Nippon Medical Association, Nippon Medical Association, and Sankei Shimbun. About 20 medical students also attended the ceremony.

Good article although I'd argue IHA has oversight on activities of all Imperial members.

Good article although I'd argue IHA has oversight on activities of all Imperial members.
Quote:
Kamata, who has known Naruhito for more than 30 years, described the crown prince as a patient man who does not flinch from criticism. For example, he did not allow a stream of stories in the media about his wife's prolonged absence from public duties to get to him.
“He was not disturbed and always had a positive way of thinking,” Kamata said.
However, he added that on occasion Naruhito would vent his frustration by saying, “I am at a loss about what to do.”

Kamata would tell Naruhito things like, "You should make your own style for official duties” and “You should do what you want to do without losing yourself.”
At times like that, Naruhito would look visibly relieved.
I wonder whether he actually was "not disturbed".

Quote:
Naruhito has spent his adult life studying water-related issues, such as flood control, water utilization and transportation by water. He has read reams of specialized books and other materials on the subject, and inspected irrigation channels, canals and other facilities in all sorts of places.

In March 2013, he gave a keynote speech on the history of water-caused disasters in the United Nations headquarters in New York. It was the first time for a member of the Japanese imperial family to address the world body.

[...]

In a news conference held in 2005, Naruhito made a case for performing "official duties that are in line with the times,” and cited tackling water-related problems as a key duty.

“The crown prince’s engagement in studies on water-related issues is an encouragement for many researchers," Oda said. "People concerned with water-related issues all agree that they want the crown prince to be engaged in water issues for as long as possible.”
Interesting, I remember that critics have said water issues are too political.
