Love the dress and the jewels. She looks great..

I tend to believe it's a new dress made by the same person who made the other red velvet dress. I understand when royals recycle, but I do grave for new gala dresses occasionally.

I have a postcard that a freind send me from a new year a while ago with Alexandra and not with Mary I supponse this was before Mary Married Fred and Alexandra have a very similar dress, I wonder if this was Alexandra dress and they made same changes well not too many just the cleavage?????

I love this red velvet gown. So lovely, sensual and elegant. Then again, I'm a sucker for velvet gowns :)

I wasn't aware that the cleavage stands out. To me the colors look nice on both of them. Fred looks sharp in the uniform with the black hat on. Of course Mary's old fashioned velvety gown looks good in that pose. They looked pretty once again and I just hope they and everyone had a fabulous new year's celebration. Things seem so good for them and the world so, it's nice to see this new day dawn. Good luck people.

I am not sure whether this is the same dress with modifications as worn a few years ago. It pretty much looks the same but the modifications are too many I think. So maybe it really is a new dress that reminds us to the one she has worn before. But I am not very sure on it..

Mary looks sensational and that's a gorgeous purple velvet gown that so flatters her coloring. The style is really beautiful as well and that looks like a fishtail train, if I'm not mistaken. I really like that jewel in her hair; I believe it's part of the ruby parure from another thread I've seen.

I agree. The original dress was elegant and flattering and, if this is the same dress, I would go so far as to say it had been ruined. The front sillohette is completely straight and figure hugging, and not in a flattering way. It needed a little volume at the waist and in the front of the skirt (a la Queen Margarethe) to give it the required gravitas for such an occasion.

I would go so far as to say that a fabulous train is not sufficient to overcome the obvious deficiencies in the front and, in the end, fabulous colour and material notwithstanding, it did not meet the required standard for a Gala Gown.

Mary wore a repeated but modified gown at the New Year's reception:

Even though I do prefer the original version,I thought she looked great! I love the color and the jewels.

The dress looks nice on the Danish crown princess although I don't like that it's velvet but it's nice anyways.

I think it's the same dress that's been altered because of the new, set in waist, and also because of the "skimpiness" of the front as Marg above mentioned. I remember thinking the maternity dress was skimpy in front also.
The maternity version had a scoop neck and empire waist. All you would have to do is to cut off the original bodice on the front from the waist up, ripping out the sides. Put in a new front bodice piece, stitch it across the waist and sides. Then add a new waistband all around. The bell-like sleeves are the same.
We have a really nice picture of the back and the train, I don't remember the old train.
All this depends upon saving some old fabric and having it match after 5 years, lol!

Well when you have one of the most beautiful ruby tiaras in Europe, what other color could be more perfect for a winter royal celebration than rich, red, velvet? I love the belt with the jeweled synch on the center, great length on the train too, the top shows her beautiful neckline too.

In some pictures, Mary's gown looks ruby red and in others it looks a deep purple, but the style, color and velvet give her the look of a medieval princess. And I see Joachim is without Marie who is very close to her due date, I understand.

Thank you for the pictures, Daria.

I think the gown is perfect simple to show off all this beautiful jewelers!

Very beautiful! The dress, colors and jewelry go well.

I'm glad you liked the pictures :D. I agree with your assessment of the dress. When I looked at it, I thought the neckline especially had the look that was very reminiscent of the Tudor period. Simply stunning.

Always loved the dress and the jewels the hair oraments are also cute.

She looks beautiful as aways. A beautiful elegant princess

Both dresses are quite lovely. Hard to choose which one I like better.

Here is the first time she wore the dress:

I think its the same dress too - here a few close ups

I have to say I like this version much better than the first one:
http://www.seegerpress-online.de/topixx/data/pre-SEEGER00173119.jpg
where I found the neckline far too low and the dress itself a bit frumpy.

The new version is very clean cut and classic, perfect for me, what I dont like is the overthetop-fake hairpiece the brooch in the belt area - too much.

I love the Danish Royal Family they look so regal, beautiful gowns and jewels and the men look like they just stepped out of a fairytale. Yet they can be so down to earth and normal. I love following them

You'll have a hard time convincing med that the hairpiece is fake;) - no way do I belieive it is not real gems, probably from the reworking of the tiara when it seems that the top piece(s) was taken out and the rest made more dense to accommodate Mary's smaller headsize.
I agree about the neckline, not least because it does not allow Mary to wear the grand necklace that goes with the parure - and it is a bit heavy with the chain of the order of the elephant (and I am aware that these New years cours are not about being esthically beautiful or even fashionable - it's about bringing all the heavy artillery out, jewel-wise, but still...).

I'll eat my hat if there isnt a fake part in the hair!

Regarding the jewel pieces, I've asked the question in the jewellery thread if the parure was shortened and the "leftovers" were used for the hair.

If so, to me it looks great. I always found the ruby parure close to being over the top, too much, but this combination looks so much better, I love the jewellery hairpieces (loved them at Charlene of Monaco on her wedding day too) and the smaller ruby parure.

I believe its the same dress worn during the pregnancy with the top part altered.

Bon appetite then ;) - I can't prove that they are all real, it's just my gut feeling.

I saw your question in the jewellery thread; I have been looking for the first discussion on the reworked Danish ruby parure in the Jewels of the world board but didn't find it. Here is a link to a discussion mid-December about the parure and the changes to it - Royal Jewels of the World Message Board: Photos Ruby Parure (Denmark) - first 2 times Mary wore it

I like the hair piece as well. It gives the whole set added versatility. The long earrings may e.g. be showcased better if the hair piece is somewhat smaller than the tiara.

I am almost persuaded that they are two totally different dresses. The neckline on the original was designed to carry the ruby necklace and this one wouldn't fit a choker let alone a piece of serious jewellery.

In point of fact, that is what I liked best, her hairstyle, her new hair pins and fabulous up do. The pearls looked altogether too dreary for words. Mary needs to remember the old adage, "Just because you can doesn't mean you should!"
