This new dress is gorgeous but not fond of this orange colour!

When looking through the years, this is my least favourite outfit of Mary. In previous years, she opted for simple but very regal (almost matronly) elegance, very suitable for this gala. This year, everything is over the top, almost flashy, too much of everything, a mismatch in style and colours.

Sorry to say this but compared to the years before this appearance was Hollywood starlet going royal, too loud and extrovert.

Mary's dress is beautiful! Fiery!

I think that this is the most regal gown she has worn, after the red gown at her pre-wedding ball and the dark blue gown at New Year's Gala in 2006!

I could not possibly imagine that orange suits her so well! I love it! :previous:

However, next time please drop the fur, the brooch on the dress and the pendant! I believe that the whole outfit was eventually too much!!

Hey guys - Princess Mary looks stunning - nothing at all of a Hollywood starlet - this outfit is brilliant and a compliment to the occasion. I am an "aussie" and in this instance proud to congratulate Princess Mary on such a brilliant colour.

The dress definitely highlights her beautiful figure. I somehow prefer to see her in a more contemporary and chic style, like a sleek gown without the billowing skirt. Maybe it is not dressy enough for this function. The simpler style would then set off the more elaborate tiara. Just my humble opinion.
In private or less formal occasions the more contemporary look is great but, and it's a big but, sleek gowns and fabulous OTT parures like Queen Desiree's when worn with such gowns make her look underdressed, sort of "is that a nightdress" look.

It has taken time but Mary is aware that there is a difference between an evening gown and a gala gown. One you wear with mostly contemporary jewelery and two you bring out the big guns because the whole "Gala" look is making a very strong statement. Imagine a famous opera singer, centre stage, singing a magnificent aria and wearing a slimline dress. She just disappears into the backdrop. It just doesn't work because the stage or for royalty, the event, is played out under serious lights, camera, action!

Compare this dress with Princess Marie's beautifully soft, younger, fairytale Princessy look. For her, now, it works. Five years from now? Probably not.

Princess Mary is absolutely perfect.... I am glad she chose orange colour... it is one of my favourite colours to wear... and it is perfect on her... Really love all her look !!

I don't see that. IIRC every year some were complaining about the "over-the-top" outfits and jewellery. To me the over-all-impression is the same, the only difference seems to be that Mary is wearing a more vibrant colour this year.
I like that colour for a change and think Mary looks very regal and appropriate for this event which is actually a bit over the top.
(My least favourite is actually the blue gown from 2006, Mary looked uncomfortable in it and odd with that hairstyle).

I must say all the dresses , night gowns i mean, always show a very incredible figure to Mary, very nice waist, slim, like a barby, I ownder if she uses undernith a corsett or soemthing like tha! for the contrary marie always use dresses with a cut undernieth her breast, i hope i express myself correct

I am not sure about this colour I rarely dilike anything that Mary chooses but this looks cheap to me but only IMO.

I am not a fan of this gown! The color(s) too loud, the over-skirt is too large. It appears as if there is an slimmer gown underneath; that looks more elegant, but the overall, no.

Also I must say that she has less and less of the gowns (It is winter still!) :D
Maybe global warming is the cause?

I love this photo because it shows just how beautiful the top half of the dress is, it fits her like a dream too. But then...

It looks like she wrapped a shiny orange sarong around her waist. Cant wait to see this gown at a later date though, without the shiny bit. Im sure its perfection underneath. I have been waiting for her to wear orange again though, the last time I remember her wearing it was when she was in Oz after they got married.

Again, the pose Mary is doing in front of the photographers with the fur is far too extrovert or provocative for my taste - instead of wearing a fur cape, like in previous years, this time Mary wore the fur as kind of a pashmina or stole, very strange in winter and it added up to this flashy and overdone appearance.

...in which case she is only copying dear old MIL (Glittering Royal Events Message Board: More part 1- scroll down to bottom) - and I haven't read any complaints about QMII's use of this gorgeous silver fur stole/pashmina which the queen has worn for years ?

I like this dress on Mary, I'm not sure orange is her best color(as no one can wear it like Maxima IMO), but it's nice to see her do something different and a bit over the top. Love the jewels,of course, but the best thing is that she is really smiling, looking like she is enjoying herself.

I agree 100%. We always hear about Mary being so stiff, no fun. I am sure the press asked to see her gown and she obligied. What is the problem with that. She was gorgeous and and her normal radiant self. The stole was stunning. If there is a problem with the stoles that are being worn you might realize this is a new generation. They will not do things the way the older royals have done for years, just as the Queen's generation did not always do the way her mother may have done. Life goes on and that is what keeps us watching and chatting. 2010 not the 1960's.:flowers:

I love the dress and I'm glad she chose a bright colour, and very happy she had a new gown. I do adore the previous years dresses.
Mary doesn't look like a starlet, she looks as she always has done.

If Mary hadn't removed her fur sole like that we would not of had a picture of the top of the dress.

I sorta agree with DoM, at least in terms of the coverage i.e. wearing her fur in a stole or wrap fashion. I don't think it provides adequate coverage. She is wearing sleeveless, in previous years, she wore full sleeves, or covered herself up with a cape or fur jacket such as the one Marie wore this time. I think the primary purpose of wearing the fur is to provide warmth against harsh winter and if it isn't worn correctly, well then that defeats the purpose. I liked the jacket Marie wore, I think that provided better coverage than the fur stole worn by Mary.

As for the comparison with Margrethe, there is a bit of difference. I don't think this has anything to do with old or new generation. Covering yourself up against cold is always of paramount importance, whether it be the older generation, the present, or the coming one. Margrethe is wearing a bigger stole than Mary's, also she is covered at least till her elbows, as she's wearing 3/4 sleeves.

I like the orange gown and how the material sort of gathers to one side. The brown fur stole compliments the orange beautifully. I don't think she has a choice about wearing the gold Order. She should've used a gold clutch instead of a silver one.

Out of these past gowns I only like the top gray one. In the bottom one (blue) the overall look is a bit too matronly for me. She's too young to look that way imo.

Love the picture... She and Fred look like they're having so much fun together.
As for the dress, she doesn't pull off orange like Maxima does but she looks good. Happy, healthy Mary.

Are there any other tiara's Mary can wear other than this one and her wedding tiara?

CP Mary is not as thin as Princess Letizia! Now that is thin...but they also happen to be 2 healthy women!
And no, CP Mary has no other tiara to wear - just the ruby and diamond tiara and her wedding tiara. She did borrow a tiara, earrings and brooch set for the gala dinner to celebrate Prince Henrik's 75th birthday in June 2009. It was called the 'Midnight' tiara but it was only on loan for the night.

Princess Mary has evolved in her style over the years. To me she was matronly at first and little by little Mary has found her way to a style that suits her as a royal. She has put her coloring, makeup, the gown, jewels and purse together very carefully to enhance the total effect. I believe Princess Mary could have had another tiara on loan from the vault, but she seems to feel comfortable with this ruby tiara. Maybe it just feels right on her head. Her hair style goes with the tiara. The orange gown and ruby necklace in my opinion compliment each other and do not clash. The purse in silver was just the right contrast to her gown. To me Princess Mary has really come into her own in style this last year. Maybe she is starting to feel comfortable in her life and role.:);):)

At first I cringed when I saw the dress. But now I actually don't mind it. I think what detracts from the dress is the ruby parure set and the brown fur stole. I think the color of last year's stole in this year's style would have been better and I think diamond-only jewelry would have enhanced the whole ensemble. It seemed like there were too many colors competing with the orange rather than complementing or accentuating it. She should be given greater access to other tiaras.

Mary looks lovely in that gown and she can pull off the color orange although as noted, not like Maxima. To me, the ruby tiara and jewelry clashed with the orange of the dress and I agree that diamond-only jewelry and tiara would have looked much better. It appears that this is a grand occasion so I can understand the ruby tiara and jewels.

I was surprised at the choice of color, Mary didn't wear orange too often. Nice to see a new dress, but: I would like to change the lower part of the dress (taffeta looks like it was pinned to her dress at the last moment), it looks a little underdeveloped. Anyway, I like the fur and the clutch bag. Orange looks fantastic with the rubies. The hairstyle is ok. I would like to see the necklace from the set, but I understand that it could be 'too much". So far this is the most eye-catching outfit from New Years Galas.
