British Royal Family Engagements: 2022 - 2023

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Not sure if this the right thread. The late Queen was patron of several hundred charities and organisations. Will these automatically pass to the new monarch?

Some will - those that she held by virtue of being the monarch but others will either no longer have a royal patron and others will be redistributed. With Philip's retirement and death, Harry and Andrew being stripped of their patronages and now the death of the Queen there are at least 1000 patronages that no longer have a royal patron.

Some of Charles' automatically passed to William e.g. patron of Surrey County Cricket Club - always held by the Duke of Cornwall as their home ground is part of The Duchy of Cornwall ... an aside ... last Thursday England and South Africa were to start a 5 day test match at The Oval. They tossed the coin with Charles owning the ground. After the toss they couldn't start play due to a 'wet outfield' and then the rain came. Then the news came about the Queen so Friday's play was cancelled. When they finally started the game on Saturday the ground had a new owner - William. The King will take over as patron of Middlesex County Cricket Club as that position is always held by the monarch and their home ground is the 'home of cricket' Lords Cricket Ground. The last time I saw Philip in person was at Lords, in 2015, when he came to the ground and it was the only time I saw his standard as it flew above the home dressing room while he was at the ground.

Yesterday besides following the coffin and all the other things we saw associated with that event William carried out his first duty as Duke of Cornwall ... He held a meeting via video link with the Duchy Finance Committee. He has been attending these meetings for a couple of years now but this is the first time as Duke of Cornwall.

Has anything be seen of the late Queen's 7 royal cousins this week?

The Queen's royal cousins - The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke and Duchess of Kent, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra - all except The Duke of Gloucester and The Duchess of Kent were waiting at Westminster Hall for the reception of the body of the Queen.

The Duke of Gloucester walked behind the coffin, in the third row, between Sir Tim Laurence and the Earl of Snowdon.

The Duke of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent left the Hall with The Duke of Gloucester and both the Kent's proudly wore their army uniforms. The DM described the The Duke of Kent as wearing a 'dark suit' - he was wearing the uniform of a Field Marshal in the army.

The only one who hasn't been seen so far, and may not be seen, is the Duchess of Kent.

Some of them also were waiting outside at St James' Palace for the proclamation of Charles as king.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent were all at the proclamation with some of their children as well.

The Westminster Hall event is recorded in the CC while those attending the proclamation did so unofficially.

As for Charles having a 'day off' - hardly. After the public events on Wednesday he had 6 phone calls from Governors-General and Presidents and another 8 on Thursday. He also has the red boxes to read and go through as well. I do hope he had some time to simply take in all that has happened quietly in his gardens.

Weekly Update to 18th September, 2022

This past week has been the busiest in terms of number of engagements I have encountered in my years of analysing the CC. The King did engagements every day.

A note – I this analysis I am only including those who are HRH or married to an HRH. I have the figures for people such as Louise and will include them in my annual analysis but not the weekly one.

From this week the figures for The King, The Queen Consort, The Prince and Princess of Wales will only be those they did while holding those titles – other than the ‘League Table’ which will be based on the total figures. Again the end of year analysis will include two entries for these four people – one on their pre-8th September and one on the 8th September onwards.

MISSING DAYS:

17th and 18th September – 49 engagements (although I expect them to appear in the next day or so as happened with the engagements that were missing last week)

Sorry but if I have to verify that I am human again I will be gone. It is ridiculous that it is EVERY post.

For the first day since the announcement of The Queen's death there is no CC for Tuesday 20th September. After the busiest 10 days I have analysed it will be nice to have a simple day in my records ... simply a yellow line through each page that says 'no CC today'.

I’m glad you got the break and that they did as well.

Did the Duchess of Kent not attend the funeral? I'm quite surprised.

Do we know which children of the Kent's, Gloucester's, Michaels and Alexandra did or didn't attend?

Also any of the Lascelles in attendance? Likewise any of the late Queen's maternal relatives?

The Duchess of Kent wasn't listed in the CC. The children of the Duke of Gloucester, Duke of Kent, Prince Michael and Princess Alexandra were listed as attending. There was no mention of any Lascelles or of the late Queen's maternal relatives.

The list from the CC:

The King and The Queen Consort,
The Prince and Princess of Wales with Prince George of Wales and Princess Charlotte of Wales,
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,
The Duke of York,
Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Eugenie,
Mrs Jack Brooksbank and Mr Jack Brooksbank,
The Earl and Countess of Wessex with the Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and Viscount Severn,
The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence,
Mr Peter Phillips,
Mr and Mrs Michael Tindall,
The Earl of Snowdon,
Viscount Linley and The Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones,
Mr Daniel and The Lady Sarah Chatto,
Mr Samuel Chatto and 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Chatto, RM,
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester,
Earl and Countess of Ulster with Lord Culloden and The Lady Cosima Windsor,
The Lady Davina Lewis with Miss Senna Lewis,
Mr George and The Lady Rose Gilman with Miss Lyla Gilman,
The Duke of Kent,
Earl and Countess of St. Andrews,
The Lord Nicholas Windsor with Master Albert Windsor and Master Leopold Windsor,
Mr Timothy and The Lady Helen Taylor with Mr Columbus Taylor, Mr Cassius Taylor, Miss Estella Taylor and Miss Eloise Taylor,
Lord Downpatrick,
The Lady Marina-Charlotte Windsor,
The Lady Amelia Windsor,
Prince and Princess Michael of Kent,
The Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor,
Mr Thomas and The Lady Gabriella Kingston,
Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy,
Mr and Mrs James Ogilvy,
Mr Alexander Ogilvy,
Mr and Mrs Timothy Vesterberg,
Miss Marina Ogilvy,
Miss Zenouska Mowatt and Mr Christian Mowatt.

Everyone else is listed under:

Members of Foreign Royal Families and other Dignitaries, the Doyen of the Diplomatic Corps and Senior High Commissioners, Heads of Mission and other Foreign Representatives attended.

I read that only 4 of the Queen's 31 cousins are still alive which is interesting. Even so, I would have expected her to be in touch with at least a few of her maternal family, likewise with some of Philip's relatives.

I believe she is still in touch with her maternal 1st cousins children and no doubt some of them were present but they aren't listed just as members of Philip's family who were present aren't listed - or the names of any of the foreign royals or Heads of State or others.

There are 5 first cousins who are still alive and are all younger than her with the eldest of those five being Sir Simon Alexander Bowes-Lyon born in 1932. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Bowes-Lyon

She still has four on her father's side The Duke of Kent (the only one of George V's grandchildren who was born during his reign still alive), Princess Alexandra, Prince Michael and The Duke of Gloucester (1935, 1935, 1942, 1944). As The Queen Mother was the second youngest of her siblings it isn't surprising that the cousins on that side of The late Queen's family mostly predeceased her.

The royals are back to work:

The King had an audience via phone link

The Prince and Princess of Wales met people and The Prince of Wales a meeting via video link

The Earl of Wessex is visiting Estonia and Germany

The Princess Royal has been visiting servicemen involved in the funeral of her mother.

And the name change has occurred: instead of meeting those involved in the "funeral for Her Majesty The Queen" it is the "funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth." Elizabeth II is no longer the "incumbent."

Weekly Update to 9th October, 2022

The Countess of Wessex was overseas in Africa all week visiting numerous countries while The Princess Royal made a quick trip to the USA. The Prince and Princess of Wales visited Northern Ireland and interestingly for me they visited Carrickfergus and the CC recorded them as The Prince and Princess of Wales Baron and Baroness Carrickfergus. I don’t remember ever seeing that before.

Weekly Update to 16th October, 2022

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have spent the week overseas. The Earl in Romania with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards while The Countess was continuing her trip around Africa visiting many nations. While on these visits I had to get used to ‘HIS Majesty’s Ambassador …’ instead of ‘Her Majesty’s Ambassador …’. Another thing that happened this week is that The Prince of Wales is now listed as ‘President’ of Earthshot Prize rather than it being something directly linked to The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales as has been the case since it was founded. I wonder when ‘Early Years’ will go the same way for The Princess.

Weekly Update to 30th October, 2022

The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Lawrence spent a number of days in Uganda while The King had to swear in his second PM in two weeks. Liz Truss was finally sworn in on 12th October and on the 27th Rushi Sunak took the same oath. I am sure that The King hopes he doesn’t have another PM for some time now but who knows what the future will bring. The Duke of Gloucester competed his visit to the USA as well.

Interesting addition to the CC over the last couple of days:

On both the 4th and 5th February The Times has included a photo from one of Charles' engagements on those days. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a regular feature of the CC and whether it will extend to other royals as well.

Thanks for the amazing work posting all that! My head is spinning still but as an excel fan that spend years doing productivity reports, and training staff in excel, I would love to see that on a chart! I don't think the forum's settings would support it, but an interactive chart would look great.

As you posted all those numbers and % I'm imagining them looking fantastic on an interactive chart and making it ongoing year after year to see patterns.

I don't have the skill to do anything like that.

The spreadsheet has 36 pages with different categories.

I have gone back to the start of the late Queen's reign and am working my way forward from 1952 but won't be able to do 1986-1996 as The Times only goes up to 1985 and the British monarchy website only starts in 1997.

I do find it interesting some of the things that were recorded in the early years e.g. when someone 'left Clarence House' and 'arrived at Balmoral Castle' and then a couple of days later 'left Balmoral Castle' and 'arrived Buckingham Palace'. Today we only get information about such an event when there is an official event to go with that 'arrival' such as the late Queen's formal greeting when arriving at Balmoral but not every time she moved house during the year.

I have also noticed that since the Queen Mother died it isn't recorded anymore when the late Queen changed her lady-in-waiting.

We also get more information about 'away days' such as all the things they do and places they visited whereas in 1952 it was 'xxxx visited Cardiff' with often no detail about what they did there.

And no details about overseas visits e.g. The late Queen's visit to Kenya in 1952 - she left London and the next thing she did, a week later, was return to London and then later in the year The Duke of Gloucester went to France for four days ... he visited some war cemeteries but that is all we are told. Today we would get a list of those cemeteries and any other activities that happened.

This is a retirement task so I am planning on taking a couple of years to do the late Queen's reign and then backwards through her father's, uncle's, grandfather's etc and if I live long enough right back to the start of the CC.

FYI

There is a difference between 'Rugby' and 'Rugby League' which is why both games are listed.

The most obvious difference is the number of players. Rugby has 15 a side while Rugby League has 13.

Mike Tindall played Rugby for England. Princess Anne has been the patron of Scottish Rugby for years while William is the patron of Welsh Rugby and Catherine of England. She is also the patron of English Rugby League.
