Weekly Update to 8th January, 2021

A New Year has begun and at the end of the first week we have had some of the usual first week engagements but done differently e.g. The Princess Royal’s attendance at the Oxford Farming Conference done via video this year.

Because I have access to The Times I will now be going from Saturday to Friday. I think Friday makes a better 'end of the week' than Thursday which I previously used due to relying on the British Monarchy's website version of the CC.

I saw this and thought it was someone at the court circular making an error. I wonder what his office is doing? I understand Anne, Sophie and Edward are completely relooking at engagements and patronages - so am an interested in what on earth is going on here.

Again it appears that the poor staff member tasked with updating the online Court Circular is again banished to a small cupboard under the stairs at BP tapping away on an ancient laptop with intermittent internet.

Thank you ILuvBertie for your weekly tally.:flowers:

He has done the same thing this week as well.

I think he simply had one person from each organisation with a similar interest on the same video conference call - so rather than have five meetings one on one he had one meeting with all five at once allowing for a longer meeting and sharing ideas as well.

Just came across an interesting entry in the CC for 27th January:

St James’s Palace
27th January, 2021
The Earl and Countess of Wessex and Forfar this morning spoke to local representatives from Angus Council, Police Scotland and NHS Tayside in Forfar via video link.

Their Royal Highnesses afterwards spoke to the owners of Saddlers Bakery, Forfar, via video link.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex and Forfar subsequently spoke to volunteers from Voluntary Action Angus via video link.

Their Royal Highnesses later spoke to representatives and volunteers from Guide Dogs Scotland based in Forfar via video link.

I have seen Earl and Countess of Wessex and Earl and Countess of Forfar but never the two together before. I assume that is because they were talking to places in Scotland but were still in England.

When Charles speaks to people in Scotland, even when in England, he is Duke of Rothesay (and when in Scotland and speaking to people in England he is still Duke of Rothesay).

The Cambridge's are the Cambridge's everywhere now it seems - even when the visited Edinburgh last year they were still referred to as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and not the Earl and Countess of Strathearn in the CC ... which they were using in the early days of their marriage.

Weekly Update to 9th April, 2021

A very quiet week as last weekend was Easter and then the week ended with just a simple sad entry in the CC:

Windsor Castle
9th April, 2021
The Queen, with deep sorrow, announced that her beloved husband, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

Interestingly the British Monarchy website has an engagement for Edward on the 9th April but The Times doesn’t. I am using The Times and so am not including that engagement for Edward. The British Monarchy website doesn’t have the same entry as The Times at all

I was surprised to read today that in 2019 the Duke of York stepped down as patron of all 230 charities which he supported. Obviously the Duke of Edinburgh has left I believe around 600 charities with no current patron, and of course the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had to give up a small number of patronages. If the Queen is patron of a further 600 of so charities, then the end of her reign will (one day) leave that huge number without their patron. Likewise, Princess Alexandra and the Duke of Kent will one day leave behind a number of charities which they are patrons of. Obviously a number of patronages are taken on by other royals, but this cannot be the case for all of them.

Is there any way of finding out the total number of charities each year that had royal patrons? It would be interesting to see a yearly comparison.

At the end of the past three or four years I have posted a summary of each royals activities including the charities they have supported over the year and other organisations.

This is a link to the page where I start this for 2020.

I haven't done a year on year total as I only started this level of analysis a few years ago.

I am currently undertaking an analysis of the Queen's reign (minus the years 1986-96 due to not being able to access The Times at the moment ... maybe able to one day but one source I thought would have it doesn't have it available online ... the State Library of NSW, rather than making the entire paper available online have selected stories).

I may then do a year by year total to get a figure but it is a project for my retirement and will take years.

Weekly Update to 30th April, 2021

It seems that as lock down is being lifted more engagements are being done with some ‘in person’ engagements including visits.

I am a little surprised that The Prince of Wales has only done one engagement since his father’s funeral and hope he is ok. He was so distraught at the funeral and even when he saw The Duke of Edinburgh in the hospital that this has obviously hit him very hard. I do hope he returns soon as this will only feed into the ‘not fit to be King’ narrative of his haters. If he disappears for the best part of three weeks after the death of his father, how will he cope when his mother dies and he won’t be able to disappear as there are so many engagements he will simply have to do?

I would not begrudge the PoW a few quiet weeks to grieve his loss, and contemplate the future of the Firm, as is being suggesd in the Press. He will not have this luxury of time when his mother passes, and will probably need to spring into action almost immediately.

I don't begrudge him the time but I do know that there are some in the media who have already said that he has 'run away' and compared that to the Queen who is back to work. This is what I am talking about - the PR for him that he won't be up to the job when the time comes which has been suggested by some for decades and this disappearance from public life, while his mother and siblings are out and about will only feed that narrative.

Weekly Update to 21st May, 2021

This has been the busiest week of the year, I believe, and it was lovely to see The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in Northern Ireland (even if the mainstream media ignored that visit) while the end of the week saw The Duke of Cambridge in Scotland with the Duchess due to join him over the weekend. Based on the number of engagements undertaken in the past by people holding this position they are in for a busy week (I think The Earl and Countess of Wessex did close to 50 engagements between them during their week).
